AVS Editor won't replace wallpaper

For some reason the AVS Editor won't replace the background, it just seemed to stop working. I check and uncheck the boxes and it doesn't work anymore. It worked before, it just seemed to randomly stop.

Settings -> Display

Are "Overlay Mode" and "Set Desktop to color" activated?

Is it possible, that you're using an active desktop (maybe the result of malware?)

Yes they're both activated. How do I check to see if I have an active desktop? I will check from malware, but I highly doubt I have any, I know about that stuff, but I'll look.

Computer Hope.com: How to enable / disable windows active desktop

Are you on a dual/multi monitor system or using a virtual desktop?

Please do not PM me for tech support. Any request for tech support through PM will be ignored.

This is actually a laptop, so no multi monitor. No active desktop, and no virtual desktop.

Try pushing the 'Default' button in the 'Overlay Mode' box (AVS Editor > Settings > Display)

Have you tried updating the video/display deivers?

No dice? Please provide system & Winamp specs.

Moving from Winamp Tech Support to AVS Troubleshooting. You can get more relevant help here. Good Luck.

Make sure you are using 32-bit color depth.

Try making the color something other than default. Like bright pink. Then you can at least see that the desktop color is correct and know that the problem is with your hardware overlay settings or the overlay mode itself.

If all else fails try the vis_avs.dll from the version of winamp before last. The latest one has some random bugs.

Ok, I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling winamp before, but this time it worked. I uninstalled winamp, deleted the folder, used CCleaner to clean the registry, rebooted, reinstalled, and now it fixed itself. Seems like something just broke in the last installation. Thanks for all your help.

Deleting the folder was probably the important bit. Winamp stores all kinds of configuration files in there (vis_avs.dat for instance) and doesn't replace them on re-install.

Most likely, still would like to know what caused the sudden breakdown exactly.

Try mine, activate the 'Overlay mode' and 'Set desktop to color'. click the 'default' button under overlay mode.
Then, go to the Display Properties and select (none) as your desktop wallpaper.

And make sure you don't activate any webs and choose white on the background color.

It's not my computer because it worked before.

Ignore Nanakiwurkz. He is the perfect example of how someone can work in the computer industry and not kow jack about sh*t. It applies equally well (and shockingly often) to software and hardware technicians, programmers, web developers and especially management.

Someone can do a job for 10 or even 20 years, and just be so damned stupid that they don't learn a thing. Though at the same time the opposite happens (much more rarely), that someone can pick up 10 years worth of skill and experience in 1 year.. or whatever.

Have fun with that... if I were you I would be happy that it works and just run with it
