ID3 tags/CDDB confusion

i'm sort of confused here.
i understand how ID3 is used to label MP3 files with track/album/artist/etc info. and that some rippers/etc use a CDDB that can automatically fill out this information for you.

so if i'm spending time manually editing my ID3 tags, can't some program access a CDDB and do this for me automatically?
how does a ripping program identify MP3 files and associate them to the info in a CDDB?

MP3s aren't CDs, so you really can't look them up in the CDDB. But you can give something like http://musicbrainz.org/ a try.
