Ipod Woes

I've searched and searched but I can't find a guide on basic Ipod interaction with Winamp.
I have the latest winamp 5.3?
Last night I tried to get my mates new Ipod Nano to talk to Winamp. The Ipod is brand new, unused.
Winamp detected the Ipod and offered to manage it. I said that was fine. The Ipod then became an item in the Media Library and I was able to send files to it. I could then view that the songs were actually there and I could put them in playlists created by Winamp. All seemed to be good.
But after things looking good, the Ipod wouldn't accept that the songs were there. What is the story?
I have no experience with Ipods and don't have Itunes installed. I don't want to use Itunes.
Please help.
