Nullsoft Scriptable Install System is Complete Garbage....

Hello there everyone in the Nullsoft Brain Trust...

This concerns my VERY recent problem with Nullsoft Scriptable Install System errors with nearly every executable I attempt to download...

Something is very wrong with y'alls new fangled install system and y'all need to find the solution and quick...

I will tell you what the solution is NOT...

blaming your poor bad code on a virus, malware, spyware or any other imagined scapegoat...

I can download and execute anything based on the windows or unwise installers...

blaming your bad code on my firewall...I can download ANY other type of data- .zip, .flac, .shn, .jpg, .html, .wav, .rar and I have no problems of any kind...I daily use ftp with no problems whatsoever...

I am running windows 98

y'all are killing me here with trying to upgrade or try new software written with NSIS...

Works great for millions of people, and hundreds of projects use it. But, sure, it doesn't work.

That's all fine and dandy...but SOMETHING is gumming up the works with this install sytem...I appreciate your comment but is what I expected, instead of what I was hoping, a REAL answer to mine and possibly thousands of others' problems with what could just something as simple as a comma in the wrong place in the code...

There's nothing wrong with any of the code. As Sawg says, all nsis installers (as used by thousands of software suppliers/programs) work ok for millions of people.

At a guess, your antivirus software (which is...?) is coming up with false positives, and therefore you should either check for updated signatures, or report the problem to said antivirus software vendor. Either that, or you have a virus which is infecting all nsis installers.

I use it at work. The language it uses is back-asswards, but none of the random assertions in your post seem to make sense.

Just as expected...

I wasn't expecting any help here...One can't expect to receive help when the source of the problem won't admit that there is an issue with their software...

Just thought I would vent my frustrations with an open source product that has obvious flaws and, despite claims to the contrary does NOT work with all versions of Windows...

I noticed in one of the replies, that once again, the blame game was played with anti-virus software...I am on Win98 platform and haven't used AV software in nearly 10 years...Never had a virus due to being very careful Online...

Thanks for the amusement and predictable dialogue...

If you want help, you have to give more information that merely bitching that it "doesn't work". Anyways, if it works for millions of people, odds are something is wrong on your end.

Have you considered the possibility that you DO have a virus and it is infecting the NSIS installers before they run?

This kind of thing will give you CRC and other errors.

dinoseer: None of the responses here were from people who work for Nullsoft, but several of them are from highly competant technical people who are familiar with NSIS.

Perhaps you should consider what they say more carefully, considering they have no vested interest in "defending" NSIS.

Don't get me wrong here people...I appreciate and consider all comments that are not counterproductive, which some of my comments, have been...Sometimes one has to stir the pot in order to see what bubbles to the top...

The virus comment is interesting...I may have a virus that only targets the NSIS Installer prior to activation? I have never had a computer virus, so honestly, I don't know what symptoms to expect I did have one...I don't have any symptoms to report, other than when I attempt to download the last two programs I was interested in trying (Azureus Bit Torrent Client and an upgrade to Adaware that I just loaded in hopes of finding malicious spyware, malware and trackers-none found btw)...I am done bitching here now and my ability to vent is well-appreciated and does not go unthankless...It is only an inconvienence and doesn't crucially affect what I need to do with my Win98 PC...

Thankyou and Please have a Wonderful Day (sincerely)

That's where you're mistaken. Had you described your problems and asked for help chances are you would have gotten a lot more productive replies and less ones accusing you of trolling.
This way you just wasted people's time with your accusations, time that could have been spent trying to find the cause of your problems.

Fuck this place.

You still haven't explained what your problem is, that's the problem. It is known that NSIS works correctly on Windows 98 (there are literally thousands and thousands of examples of it working) so unless you're the one coding the NSIS script (in which case it's more likely to be a problem with your code, all things considered), it's probably a problem with your machine.

You're running Windows 98; it is generations out of date, nearly a decade old. Microsoft have publically stated that that line of OS could "probably never be fully secured", and it's passed the point where they release even security updates for it. This means there's likely to be unpatched vulnerabilities, and it's possible that some of these can be exploited even if you're "careful" with your system. That's why people immediately jump to the conclusion that it's a virus or a worm of some kind — you're claiming NSIS has a problem with Windows 98 (we know it doesn't, unless the installer in question is set up only to work on NT Windows versions, which is quite reasonable given how out-of-date the 9x Windows versions are) and we know that Windows 98 is just rubbish.

Funny, though, that 98 SE still has enough seeds to download in roughly 25 minutes from a torrent (780MB). Somebody's certainly using the heck out of it.

I have a win98 machine at home. The thing still works surprisingly fine considering its age. The hard drive will probably die any day now, but the OS works like a charm.

Although, there have been times we're I've literally spent a week straight fighting with it, replacing corrupt files reinstalling some cabs etc just to make it boot again. It's never been formatted though.

And hey, the situation could be worse. At least it isn't a Windows Me box.

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.
