Mouse Scroll not working in Vista

Hi! I have a problem with Winamp 5.33: in Windows Vista Ultimate it works fine, until I install my Microsoft IntelliExplorer4 mouse driver, IntelliPoint 6.1 witch is disabling my vertical down scroller from the scroll button. In playlist or volume bar, the scroller works just up!
I tryed to:
- install a different driver (<6.1) => Vista is refusing it
- ask Microsoft for assistance => they say that my local provider could help me (it's a mouse anyway!)
The mouse works winthout the driver but I cant use all the 5buttons and functions.
Please send me a solution or an ideea how to solve this!

I am also having this problem after installing vista yesterday. The down scroll on volume and on the playlist works but only if i scroll really hard and fast, whereas scrolling up works fine. Its strange.

Im also having a problem with the always on top function. Winamp wont stay on top even if its selected!

Any ideas?

Hey, i have the exact same problem with the scrolling down

is there a known fix for this?

also, i found out that winamp doesn't follow any of my mouse settings i.e. faster scrolling, slower scrolling.. etc.

maybe that has something to do with it?

im not too sure, but i hope either there is already a fix or a fix will be coming out soon.

thanks!

I have the same problem... been having it since vista RTM was released. I was hoping that it would be solved by now, but still no luck. The mouse and wheel works fine in every application BUT winamp. If anyone has any information on how to fix this bug, please share.

OS- vista ultimate
Winamp 5.35
MS Comfort 3000

I have this exact same problem too. I know it's not the mouse, the scroll wheel or the driver, as I have tested all three extensively with other applications.

This is strictly a problem with the 6.1 intellimouse drivers on vista and how winamp is using them (if it even is, since winamp doesn't even react to any of the settings changes in the mouse config panel).

Some suspect that it may even be restricted to wireless MS mice... but I have no proof of that. Mine is a Wireless Laser Mouse 8000.

Please fix!

I also have the same problem. Have since RTM too.

I have the WIRED MS Comfort 3000 with the 6.4 x64 Vista driver from MS. Even after I uninstall it Winamp won't scroll down. I have to format and not install the Intellipoint driver in the first place.

Hope a fix comes soon from either Winamp or MS.

This is an old thread, but the problem persists as of the newest version and I couldn't find any mention of it being a bug other than "all vista issues are known". edit: also not mentioned in notes for 5.5 beta

Anyways, it's probably caused by microsoft implementing "smooth scrolling" which makes mice send smaller values to the computer blah blah blah heres an article
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...5f5b/Wheel.doc

and here's some excerpts from it which mean winamp has to be fixed since this can't be disabled

Q. Does Control Panel allow users to enable or disable smooth scrolling support?
No. Windows Vista automatically enables smooth scrolling for mouse devices that report this functionality. There are currently no plans to provide a user interface in Control Panel or the registry to allow system-wide or user-specific ways to disable smooth scrolling.

Q. Is it necessary to modify legacy applications to support smooth scrolling?
It should not be necessary to modify Windows applications that handle window messages for vertical scrolling to support smooth scrolling if the application acts on the mouse wheel delta and does not assume a message of 120. For more information, see "Best Practices for Supporting Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Devices" listed in "Resources" at the end of this paper

I think you've probably nailed it. Unfortunately the issue is completely ignored in every beta thread...

because there's been more important things to work on for the majority of the user base. the fact that MS decided to alter existing api functionality was not helpful but with a bit more to go on now (thanks to dogtato) then i'm sure one of the devs with a vista box (i plain refuse to install that and update my graphics card since i'm tight ) will be able to get things sorted out

I'm having this same issue in Vista Ultimate.

Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0
Intellipoint Drivers 6.1

I'm rather disappointed this issue isn't fixed. It almost makes it unusable.

I'm really surprised that this still hasn't been fixed... is it really that difficult and time consuming to fix?

I know they have bigger problems to solve, it is a real shame because I really don't want to have to switch to another media player and personally, it seems that this isn't really such a big problem that will take a lot of time to fix...

The thing is... it works fine for me on Vista, so I can't reproduce it.

Then again, I'm just using a standard three button optical mouse with scrollwheel, and no extra ms/intellipoint type stuff.

So.. is it us who needs to make Winamp compatible with MS Intellipoint and other similar mouse software, or is it it vice-versa and they need to make their software compatible with Winamp?

I'll point a dev in the direction of this thread, but I can't guarantee anything.

I was actually quite serious. I can't see Microsoft fixing their drivers/software. Other mice work just fine, just not theirs. And it's not only Winamp that's affected.

As I said, scrolling works fine for me on Vista with just a standard 3-button optical mouse. I also tried my 5-button A4Tech mouse, and that also worked fine :-)

I had the same problem with my laser 8000 on Vista.
The only solution i found was to select "Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer for Bluetooth" in intelliexplorer software. But, again, this is more like a workaround

that post has been referenced before and would make sense (without a working vista machine that exhibits the issue it's a bit tricky to however test and implement such a change).

ok one trick i found using a more than 3 button mouse is to hook it up to a usb1 port (if mouse is usb) by using a usb1 hub or if you have an old microsoft pro keyboard with usb hub may take care of the problem im seeing that mice havent quite gone to usb2 drivers yet had a problem with mine where it was supposed to scroll sideways but after the system went into screen saver mode it would no longer do it but when i hooked it up to an old usb1 hub i had it worked just fine

thanks rob

SOLUTION

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!! I finally found a working solution to the annoying problem!

Do as I describe below and you will have no more problems with the scrolling (that probably goes for all software - but I've tried Picasa and winamp). Please write a post and confirm if it works for you!

FIRST! - uninstall any versions of Intellipoint (you kan keep Intellitype if you want to)

1. Download Intellipoint 6.2 (do N O T install it) http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mo.../Download.mspx
2. Use winzip to extract all files from the installer package - I suggest you extract to the desktop (keeping the file structure)
3. Go to device manager
4. Go to mice and pointing devices
5. Delete all mice AND their drivers, do a scan for new hardware or restart the computer (this step is only necessary if the method described below doesn't work - so only try it on your 2nd try)
6. If you have more than one mouse in the device manager (which is the case if you've bought the Wireless entertainment desktop 8000-set) verify which mouse that is the one to update by trying to disable the others one at a time (the 2nd mouse is touchpad in the keyboard)
7. Update the drivers for the mouse manually (by specifyfing the path to the drivers in the extracted package - eg. DESKTOP\IP32Eng6.20.182.0\ipoint\setup\files\ - use the "have disk-method")
8. Vista will probably not complain about the driver since it is signed and certified. But if Vista does - install anyway.
9. Verify that your mouse driver version is at least 6.20.178.0
10. Use your scroll wheel like any normal mouse!
11. Write a post here about your success.

This worked perfectly! -- Although I no longer have the extended options (accelerated scrolling, etc) in the Mouse control panel.

Interesting...

I HAD IP 6.2 installed - with the bug.
I just uninstalled it, now its scrolling in Winamp - it's going up/down in 1/5th blocks, but it's working.

How weird.
I installed the driver for the mouse as suggested, but not IP, and still the same (I haven't rebooted - that's next)

Odd that with Vista drivers it didn't work, then IP, didn't work, then removed it, now it works.

Insert huge WTF here - but yeah, if the bug can be looked at maybe for Winamp development, that'd be nice

Thanks for the workaround-fix!

Win2k Rules. Period.

This worked.

BUT now how do i install just Intellipoint so that i can use the extra features of my mouse?

Whenever I try do install just intellipoint or whatever the program is, it's the source of the no scrolling down.

Annoying, any alternative programs?

well if the mouse isnt a microsoft mouse (what im reading it is)you could use the company who makes the mouse's drivers but if its a microsoft there probably is a way to install just the software and not the drivers(but what i understand is there is a glitch with them)

thanks rob

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/do...s/default.mspx check which type of mouse you have since the program depends on type ie: browser and gaming

(edit)>new version is 6.2.182.0 so they may have fixed glitch
