Unicode character file names don't play
Here is my setup:
Desktop is WinXP SP2 using winamp 5.33 no plugins, skins, anything. Music Server is Redhat Linux 4.0 running Samba Version 3.0.10-1.4E. -If I play my MP3s from my local windows desktop's file system everything works fine! -If I then copy over the files to the linux server and mount that files system as an SMB share -I mount the share on my Windows desktop as X: -I start to play my music, everything works fine until I get to songs that have UNICODE(french) characters in their file names. These songs do not play!! There is no error or warning, it just gets to the song, highlights the name in my play list then moves right to the next song! Here is a dump of one of the file names that don't work: ls *uk*|hexdump -C 00000000 53 61 e2 94 9c c2 bb 61 6e 20 53 75 70 61 20 43 |Sa.....an Supa C| 00000010 72 65 77 20 2d 20 41 6e 67 65 6c 61 20 28 20 5a |rew - Angela ( Z| 00000020 6f 75 6b 20 56 65 72 73 69 6f 6e 20 29 2e 6d 70 |ouk Version ).mp| 00000030 33 0a |3.| 00000032 The directory path is all ASCII, this is the only part that has any UNICODE. I'm not sure where this issue is, but I'm guessing it is in winamp not handling this file name correctly and moving on. But then why does it handle it correctly when I have the file locally? Weird! Attached is the file, hopefully the file name remains intact during the upload. |

I spoke too soon! This started to happen to me yet again today with my icelandic music (and I verified the brazilian music I first had the problem the problem still exisits there to!). Check out the info below
File name winamp displays (I copied and pasted from the ID3 tag): music\Electro\Bjork\homogenic\Bj+¦rk - Homogenic - 08 - Alarm Call.mp3 Actual file name on the server: ls *lar*|hexdump -C 00000000 42 6a e2 94 9c e2 95 a2 72 6b 20 2d 20 48 6f 6d |Bj......rk - Hom| 00000010 6f 67 65 6e 69 63 20 2d 20 30 38 20 2d 20 41 6c |ogenic - 08 - Al| 00000020 61 72 6d 20 43 61 6c 6c 2e 6d 70 33 0a |arm Call.mp3.| 0000002d What bash shell shows when you do an "ls" on the file: Bjââ¢rk - Homogenic - 08 - Alarm Call.mp3 I've verified when I copy & paste the FULL PATH from the ID3 tag window WMP can not open it, but when I navigate to the file manually from File->Open it plays sucessfully. Even weirder info: When I add the file to my play list with "Add File" and manually find the .mp3...the file plays in WINAMP!!! but the same entry for that file that I had before doesn't work!! I am convinced now this is a winamp bug, because winamp can play the file sometimes and sometimes not!! I will provide more info to anybody who needs, please ask all questions in one post because I can not on-line often. Hopefully that UNICODE stuff will translate well in this HTML post. |
