Uninstalling another application

Hi.

Before installing my app I need to check if a certain application (a old version of my software) has been installed on the computer (it will appear in Add/Remove Software).

Is it possible from a script to
1) Check if a certain app is installed on the computer
2) If yes, can I Unconditionally / Silently uninstall it?
