Is 56kbits 24hz a good streaming format?

I was using 96kbits 44hz before and I think that might have been to big seeing that users would connect then drop a cople of seconds later. Plus when shoutcast source connects and it says no listeners it takes a couple of seconds to say 0/300(0 unique). Is 56kbits 24hz a decent drop in format? I have cable modem by the way. What do you think might be a good format that sonds good and small?

96kbps is almost 3 times higher than a person on a modem can handle. isdn could just barely handle it, and everything above that would be fine. 56kbps is still too high if you want people on regular modems to be able to listen in. (operating at peak efficiency, a normal modem could take a 53kbps stream) i'd suggest no more than 24kbps for modem users.

32 kbps is fine for steaming over a 56k modem. In fact I think you can even push it up to 40 kbps - which sounds quite good in stereo. The 32 kbps should really only be used in mono.
