I thought we already had a classic skin, that would negate the need of a classic skin in a modern format now, wouldn't it?
Face it, not everybody will be able to make freeform skins. Too bad, but that's life. That is still no reason to flood us with all kinds of similar copies of a cheap knockoff classic skin in modern format. We already get enough of those anyway; a small example is in the WTF category. The rest we flush. "We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations." ~ Charles R. Swindoll |

you got me all wrong
I have no desire to make a classic skin.
well I do but thats off topic for this thread My premise is to skin WA 5 like WA 2. open the .WAL remove the PNG.'s alter graphics hopefully radically as pertains to look/shape repack and publish only using the maki and xml that exist in the WA5 Base skin that locate where to place the png and how it is to operate. that way artist/s without coding ability could still skin WA5 the WA5 base skin is what it is but could it look radically different without putting one aspect of it in a different place. the only thing that I think would have to go would be the color themes in a personalized skin although they might work if incorporated properly Hence the comparrison to skinning WA2 just making the interface for wa5 look completely different with all the functionality in the same place think Alien Mind by Nucleo in a Winamp 5 design or N-log or Nostromo by Atmo. These are only listed as examples of the possibilities. Their work of course. NO ONE should even attempt updates like this but the original authors. Or any one of 1000 differently radical designs. based on the WA5 layout as the xml/maki is scripted for. not switching to classic to use but modern skins in the WA5 base interface. skinned to look like something other than the base interface some where in these forums I can quote you Wally as saying Wildrose-Wally The Albertan (Reviewer) Registered: Mar 2001 From: Sunny Southern Alberta quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by Koogle http://forums.winamp.com/showthread...mp;pagenumber=1 that is the best skin winamp modern skin sadly abandoned.. the rest are pretty shit especially those old winamp 2 style ones.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What the fuck do you know about those old Winamp 2 style ones anyway. If you insist on talking out of your arse, you might as well move right along. Some of those old style Winamp 2 skins have ANY modern skin beat hands down. __________________ i dont know/imagine if I have made myself any clearer as to my intent, want, or desire in this matter. but I shall continue to try. __________________ |

Lol Mr Jones
Okay, amp-phibian. I'll maybe create such a skin if I get the time. Nice idea. Will slot in at #5 on my to-skin-list. The default modern skin for wa5 is much to complicated for a beginners though. ClassicPro© v2.01 : This plugin allows you to use cPro skins in Winamp. ClassicPro skins are all SUI skins and loads very quickly. ClassicPro skins is even easier to skin than Winamp Classic skins. A new layout have been added since version 2. |

Why not just learn XML? It doesn't take that much attention. Just plug in x and y in a few parts and you have a basic skin. Ask people if they don't mind if you rape their skin (also its code), and just go to town on it. |

What a lot of people get confused with is the fact they think they need a shit load of scripting to make a decent skin.
Incorrect. One of the best and most original skins I know of contains not a line of maki and is built entirely just using XML, and XML isn't exactly difficult to understand. Rip apart someone elses skin, have a look how the xml works, move stuff around in it and there you go, couldn't be simpler. When you are ready to move up to the next level then start to learn the maki side of things, but don't be confused for one minute thinking you need scripting skills to make a decent skin, in fact there is a school of thought that says too much emphasis is placed on creating whizzy scripts for skins, to the detriment of making a decent useable skin, all content and no style some might say. And to those people who might tell you that a skin isn't a skin without all the bells and whistles a script might bring, tell them to go get bent, they clearly have no concept of reality. There are several skins around that can help you learn basic XML, this one for example. http://www.winamp.com/skins/details/142323 it might look like shit, but there is almost zero maki in there and the xml is even nicely commented (I think) |

Yeah, maki is only really needed for the bells and whistles stuff. You can make a decent enough skin with barely any.

The other things Jones says are true. MAKI is good candy, but only few scripts offer further functionality. Hell, the only one I use is play->pause. I like Winamp Modern skins to try to work faster than Classic skins. |
