Streaming BBC Radio from non-MP3 asx or mms: Converting to http:
The on-line multiuser 3D game system "Second Life" is able to play most stream URL's that start with "http:" that Winamp 3.0 uses as the radio station for a land region you own in the game... however, BBC World Service Radio doesn't seem possible to easily stream in Winamp 3.0 or Second Life. BBC World Service Radio used to only have RealAudio support back in 2005, but now it has Windows Media Player support as well, with either of the following stream URLs:
http: //www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/meta/tx/nb/live_infent_au_nb.asx mms://a1149.l1305038288.c13050.g.lm.akamaistream.net/D/1149/13050/v0001/reflector:38288 The upper address is a "URL", while the lower one is a "URI", whatever that is. What I would like is to know how to convert this into an address that looks something like these: http: //cast.voxcdn.net:8000/live (Air America Radio) http: //pjs.sytes.net:8888/ (Mark Maron/Seditionist Radio) http: //207.200.96.229:8030 (Digitally Imported, Drum 'n' Bass) http: //radiolib.origamix.org:5000/radiolib (Radio Libertaire) http: //scfire-chi0l-2.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1021 (Secret Agent) http: //aud-one.kpfa.org:8000/icy_0 (Berkeley Pacifica Radio) http: //stream.army.mil:80/SRTV/SRL/128Kb (US Army Soldiers' Radio) http: //stream.nute.net/kohina/stream.ogg (Old School Game/Demo Music) ...all those URL's work fine in Second Life, but the two I have for BBC World Service News Radio do not. Is there a way to convert them on the fly, or simply rewrite the URL/URI so they will play in Winamp 3.0 and Second Life? Thanks for any help anyone can give. -Winamp Wolf |

Can't remember if Winamp 3 has support for .ASX or MMS://, probably not if you can't connect.
Both links work fine in Winamp 5. You can access the MMS stream by changing the protocol to HTTP and adding ?MSWMExt=.asf to the end - i.e. http://a1149.l1305038288.c13050.g.lm...8?MSWMExt=.asf an alternative/equivalent address is http://213.254.200.30:80/D/1149/1305...8?MSWMExt=.asf again, no idea if this works for Winamp 3, or if the address will remain static. It is always safest to connect via a playlist where possible. UJ |

Help Streaming BBC World Service Radio News in Second Life?
Thank you... the second URL you created actually works in Winamp 3.0 (I prefer to use that version.) ... however, it still does not work in Second Life. Here is info about how to do streaming in Second Life.. perhaps you can help me figure out how to convert the URL to a form that Second Life can use?

This link seems to suggest you can only stream .mp2 .mp3 and .ogg, so I guess you're out of luck. AFAIK the BBC only supply those streams in MS or Real Media format.

I see. but what about SHOUTcast? Is there a way to take one of the two types of streams BBC outputs and receive it on your own computer, then convert it on-the-fly to a SHOUTcast stream that then has a URL that is based on your own computer's IP address on the Internet, which can then be streamed on Second Life?
Something like this: BBC Server | | v Local Machine | | v Convert Stream to SHOUTcast (or MP3 or OGG) on-the-fly | | v Sent to/Received by Second Life Server | | v Stream Sent Out to Users on Second Life |

Yes, you could do that. but you'd need upstream bandwidth and a lot of technical knowhow.

Hi,
bbcradio.mobi comes up on my Motorola Q9c browser, no problem. I select the different radio stations under Windows Media Player Streams and it errors out. Go to review the error, per on screen instructions...cannot read the error. Mmmmm...... Do not have Real Player on the Q Phone, doubt if I want it. Any option(s) for the Q9c crowd? Thanks.... |
