Can i use these ports?
Hi guys,
Im a little new here, im at uni, and im trying to setup a university shoutcast server, but the IT department have told me they wont open any more ports. They told me the only open port was 80. However after doing a port scan i also found the 443 (https) port was open. Am i right in assuming that if we use SAM, we will need one port to stream through, and another port to connect to the server through SAM with? If that is true, am i able to use the 443 port for either my steam or my SAM connection? Thanks for any help you can give, James |

You only need a port two ports if you are trying to get in and DJ. If you only want to listen, then you only need one port open (bast port).
If you run the server on your computer, then you do not need an open port through the uni to jack into. I would stay away from 443. Port 80 will work though... |

But i want to be able to tune in to listen to the stream most of the time, but also use SAM to DJ from my room. So im going to need two ports for that? If that is the case the only two ports i have access to is 80 and 443. Why is 443 a no no?
Also i want to be able to broadcast though the whole internet not just on a LAN. |

it all depends where the server is. If the server is inside the lan, then you only need one port open to the outside world for everyone to listen in on.
If the server is outside the lan, then there is no issue because that server will have the ports open and you only need to connect to it. definition: lan = entire campus network. |

Actually i think its a little more complicated, because there are people in campus and out of campus who will be using SAM to manage the server.
There will also be people in and out of campus tuning into the server. However having said that, my friend setup a basic server on his computer at home, and i can connect to the stream on port 443 in my uni room, so i can use port 80 for SAM. Why did you say 443 is a bad idea? |

OK, so this is not a school approved project. Too bad, there may not be anything that you can do. If they find a server running, they may shut you down at the nearest router.

Its a university radio, it was raised at a union meeting and i said i could make it, so here i am. They only said they wouldnt open any more ports. I have the ports open that i need, i think, so im good to go, but i want to know why port 443 may become problematic.

applications that are https aware may not want to open a stream on a https port because it may get confused.

If it is an officially approved project, then why won't they open the ports? I would find someone that can force the issue so you don't have to do Micky Mousery to get it to work. We had to force the issue with our station too, now it is easy to get a couple more ports added to the firewall. I say find some of the faculty to push this through, that's the only way things happen. Thankfully our station is the focus of a few classes, so when you start telling people that the classes may need to be cancelled, things happen more easily.
Also what school is this for? And do you have a broadcast station too? Just curious, so it's not that important. Your mileage may vary! |
