MPEG Layer 3 wav files

Many folks use mpeg layer3 wav files. These are often converted from mp3 sound files. Also many sound effect files are in this format.
It sure would be nice if the tecks at WinAmp would fix it so that these files that play readily in WMP, would also play in WinAmp, just as readily without making changes to Input plugins.
The fix for this maybe scary for those that know little or nothing when it comes to configuring Input plugins.
The current remedy is to do the following:
Winamp 5.21 > Prefs > Plugins > Input:
in_wave.dll > config > de-select WAV
in_dshow.dll > config > add ;WAV to the Extension List

Hopefully you tech guys can fix this.
Thanks for a wonderful player as it is now!

Yes, well sort of. lol
When converting mp3 files to compressed wav type files, the extension on the converted file changes to .wav.
The wav file properties change to as an example:
Bit Rate 24kbps
Channels 2(stereo)
Audio sample rate 12 kHz
Audio format MPEG Layer-3
The file size is 449 KB and Uncompressed it would be 7178 KB with a 15 to 1 Compression Ratio.
Now I don't know all the technical stuff that one could spend years on learning, but I do know that WinAmp in it's basic installed form, does not play these as readily as WMP.
Thanks for your reply.

No, mp3 and mpeg audio layer 3 are the exact same file. You can't have a file that is both mp3 and wav at the same time.

I'm not exactly sure where you're getting this, could you link one of these files so we can see what you mean?

Converting an MP3 file to WAV with MPEG Layer 3 results in *exactly* the same data in the "data" chunk of the file.

Only the File header is changed to a "RIFF" Wave File Header.

If you want to play those files, use the Nullsoft Waveform Wrapper, which can be downloaded here:
