Snap, crackle, pop

Im using 5.5 Pro right now, but have experienced this phenomenon for a couple versions now.

There are random popping sounds while playing back music, much as if I was playing a scratched vinyl record.
The pops are not very loud, and so more prominent when playing music with quiet passages.

I have compared with e.g. Windows Media Player and don't get the problem, so it doesn't seem to be faulty electrical grounding of the system as I suspected at first.

I don't, however, want to use WMPlayer: I want to use Winamp as I have since 1997. But the pops/clicks are a problem.

Anybody got a clue - had the same problem?
