I want to make sure I have this correct. I just got the Shoutcast server. I have selected my mp3 files into Winamp. Now, most of these files were encoded at 128kps.
I have selected to stream at 20 kps 11khz under the format selection on my Shoutcast server. Will this create a problem with skipping? Do I need to re-encode my mp3's to 20kps before playing them or will the Shoutcast server automatically do this?

Your codec should.

You need a codec to stream.

no, you don't need to reencode anything. just play it.

let me add to that question a bit.

if all of the mp3's were over 56kbps but many of them were at 128 or 160. would it effect anything? i dont think it would, but i thought i'd ask to be sure.

is there any quality difference between streaming mp3's encoded at 56kbps through a 56k stream vs. streaming mp3's encoded at 128kbps through a 56k stream?

I just asked the same question a few questions back. I then tried it myself and at least my ears can't hear any difference. The files were originally encoded with Fraunhofer also.

... and it goes a little something like this.

WinAMP plays source audio, any format, any bitrate. The unencoded wav stream created is then passed to the DSP plugin (Digital Signal Processing) this then uses an external codec (typically netshow from MS cos it's free and linked on the shoutcast site) this re-encodes the stream at your cast rate.

This cast is then relayed to the server (as an http stream) which relays it to clients that tune in, as an HTTP stream.

And that, said the mayor, is that
