Meh they have three or four count with letters threads.

I could prolly write a psychology paper on this sort of addiction phenomenon. It is similar to a general social media or WOW addiction, but the passivity, forced rate of uninvolvement (post time limits), and the medium it manifests in separate this from other kinds of computer addiction. The interesting addition is the hive like mentality to start counting anywhere someone else starts. Combine that with the desire to infect other threads, especially any thread that speaks against the counting cult and you have one hell of a self-replicating, and self-protecting system. Let alone the fact that the result (the actual counting) is more or less completely irrelevant to the action. The only measure of counting success, is to count as much as possible. And it always takes more posts to get that same buzz out of counting. Don't even get me started on group addiction and crowd thought involved in someone starting counting; I could go for hours about the compound effect of increasing quantities of "mega-counters" on the total ecosystem and initiation of new members.

Luckily the forum will crash before any of the threads reach any sort of end. Maybe we should start a counters anonymous anyways and try and salvage some of you people from your pathology.

Most times I count, it's while doing something else useful that requires that I wait a bit at certain points. Other times I count when passing by the computer. Still other times while watching TV/movies on the other monitor or talking on the phone, or stopping for a snack. I don't feel it has the symptoms of addiction, which most importantly include a significant detriment to other facets of life. I still have good jobs/education/wife/non-computer hobbies/irl friends/etc, none of which is affected in a bad way due to counting. Addiction is when some other important part of life is hurt by the addiction. One might claim denial, which is often the first step of addiction, but I believe anyone that took a close examination at my day-to-day activity would see that there's no real problem here.
