need an advice
First of all, I have no idea about skinning so forgive me if I ask something stupid.
I downloaded a skin that I like pretty much, but since it’s not fitting with my desktop theme I would like to change the background of it (for personal use). My question is, if it’s possible, what kind of program I need for it? |

If its a modern skin you need something capable of editing a .png file. Most skinners use something like Photoshop or GiMP...but even MS paint will do (the ms paint in vista does png...don't remember if paint in xp does).
The nice thing about modern skins is the color themes that come with a lot of them so there may already be a theme in the skin that fits your desktop. Did the Author not include any? Which skin are you referring to? |

Yes, it has color themes but also a picture as a background. The name of it is Vision, it’s something like an eye, that it’s just... not fitting with the forest theme of my desktop and I would like to replace it with something more appropriate.
I have photoshop, but... I’m wondering where I find the components of the skin? Or do I have to unpack the .wsz file? |

Rename the .wsz or .wal file to a .zip and unpack it.
Find the graphic in the image folder and replace or modify it. Just make sure to keep the name the same. |

So could i take any .wsz file, unzip it, and customize it? I've never played around with skins before. Sorry if I sound like a uber-noob.

Yes you could. Any maki scripts are compiled so those wouldn't be editable. But there is nothing stopping you from modifying any png or xml script.
