Holy fuck that's a big mountain....
Well boys and girls....
As part of my ongoing travels, I found myself in Nepal, and a trip to the Himalayas wouldn't be complete without at least wondering what it would be like to climb Mount Everest. So, following in the footsteps of Hillary, Tenzing and the like, I headed off three weeks ago, and after hiking 300km through the highest mountains in the world, climbing over 15,000 metres, and getting eaten by snakes and leeches, I finally got to stand at the roof of the world last week - Mount Everest Base Camp. I wish I could say that I got to the top, but I didn't have the $50,000 to spare that the Nepalese government want as royalty fees, but it was amazing nonetheless. Pictures will follow, but here's a teaser for now.. Like my photography? Buy some here.... |

That's just a small mountain, I think you actually have a big body instead...
A god has appeared at Mount Everest!

Yes and no. On one hand, it keeps every idiot off it, which is a good thing, IMHO. But yeah, for those serious enough to want to try it, $50,000 is a bit crazy alright.

I support screening to keep "every idiot off it", but to charge that price is nothing more than telling the world that the country's government is a bunch of greedy assholes.

I know... good to see I have so many friends!
Anyhow, now that Nepal is almost over, I'm trying to figure out how to get from India or Sri Lanka to Australia for xmas... without flying... so that Sharon can adopt me, give me a floor to sleep on for a few days and feed me up. Any suggestions???? Like my photography? Buy some here.... |

Is Ada still with you, or did she dump ya and flee back to civilization? And yes, I'll gladly adopt and feed you, but, I won't let you sleep on the floor, I'll let you sleep on our bumpy futon

Well, guess where I ended up again...? Got bored in Georgia, made my way to Nepal again and am currently in Kathmandu about to get a night's sleep before heading back to Everest tomorrow. Bus to Jiri, then off through the Himalayas again to the big mountain.
Will try to get some decent photos in. Like my photography? Buy some here.... |

15,000 meters... no 8800 meters... Mars has a couple mountains that big. Nothing here. I've done Mt. Hood a couple times. That's 3424 meters and it's a challenge, but not suicide. Even at 3500 meters, elevation sickness will kick in if you stay very long. It's pretty hostile. People take kids up there like it's a picnic. Some of them don't come back. If I trained for a year, I'd probably end up backing off Everest. Most people don't make it and it has about a 5% mortality rate for even trying. From my reading, it would seem you'd end up wandering through old oxygen bottles, tents and corpses before you summit Everest. It's not a wonder Nepal really doesn't want people up there. Global Movies and TV God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to hide the bodies of people who pissed me off. |

RoH - 15,000 metres ...
Try reading that as 15,00 metres in the course of a 300 km trek, not 15,000 metres all in the one spot. Like a bike race, it's not the distance that gets you, it's how many hills you have to go up and down. UJ |

15,000 meters up is different from 15,000 meters taking a hike. There is a nice trail for a bunch of miles around Mt. Hood. That's a good hike. Climbing it is different, and then there is the difference in how you climb it. That has differing difficulty from not too bad to Oh wow I should have stayed home. Then the weather can do you in. I've seen conditions from a day trip to OH F! am I gonna get out of here alive?
Still sounds like fun. Global Movies and TV God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to hide the bodies of people who pissed me off. |
