Shuffle problem

ok, I've tried the clean installs and other suggestions from the forums.

My problem is shuffle doesn't seem to be working any more. when I open my playlist, it starts on the last song, then goes to #1, #2 etc.

I have it on my laptop, same version of windows and programs and it works fine there.

oh, and if I do random sort on the playlist, it's random is to alphabetize the list.

shuffle doesn't work any more.

I recently upgraded to 5.4 and I'm having the EXACT same problem that I've been reading about.

I have the same folder that I've been using. The older version of winamp (with shuffle on) would just pick one of the 300 songs and then pick another.

With the new version (With shuffle on or off) it just goes down my list from the top. If I toggle the shuffle off it still goes down the list. Then if I toggle it back on:
It plays the last song in the file and then the 1st song...and then continues down the list.

I was shocked when I read that others are having the exact same problem that I am having and that there isn't a fix listed.
IN FACT, IT ALMOST SOUNDS LIKE WINAMP DOESN'T EVEN BELIEVE THE PROBLEM EXIST.

The problem DOES exist, so if there is no fix, is there any way that I can delete Winamp 5.4 and go back to a previous version?

Thanks,
Shack

Shuffle

Forgot to mention that I upgraded to Pro version. (I really NEED this shuffle to work)
I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO EVER USE Window Media Player again.

By the way, I was informed to send my_plugin_list so I've attached it to this.

Thanks Again,
Shack

Shuffle still doesn't work

By the way...

I'm running WinXP Home Version.

I just followed the Clean Install Instructions:
I Deleted WinAmp from Control Panel.
I also Deleted the entire WinAmp folder under Program files. And then downloaded Winamp 5.54 and reinstalled.

The Exact Same Problem:
Shuffle just doesn't work!

And, for some reason, when I close and then open WinAmp again:
It Once Again, plays the Last song in the music folder that I have selected and then jumps back to the top of the list and plays them IN ORDER. (No Shuffle No Random)

Thank You.

Still No Shuffle

I just got a reply from WinAmp and they wanted to know if I had the Shuffle button turned on!!!

I HATE WMP and I just found something called: MEDIAMONKEY.
Looks Promising.

I think that I'll do the same as you and wait till Winamp comes out with a new version, unless of course, MediaMonkey works out better.

It just kills me that I Paid for WinAmp and their only reply was: Are you sure the Shuffle button is on? And: "The shuffle feature works perfectly fine for me"

If other people are experiencing the Exact Same Thing, it is obviously a bug and you would think that WinAmp would act a little more interested. Oh well...
LOL>>>So much for WinAmp's HELP.

Shuffle works fine. I can not reproduce the issue(s) mentioned. Please provide additional Winamp & system specs.

Please do not PM me for tech support. Any request for tech support through PM will be ignored.

Already send plugin txt file

By the way, I already sent the plugin.txt file along with this letter to WinAmp:

"Before I say a thing, let me say: "THANK YOU WinAmp for your FANTASTIC SOFTWARE!"

I've Never Liked the Windows Media Player so after using WinAmp I decided to send you folks our money for your hard work and upgraded to 5.541 Pro. Now the Shuffle doesn't work at all!

I had been using WinAmp 3x and it worked fine for what I wanted it to do. (We're almost 60 and don't require much any longer
-I'd select a music folder on my machine.
-WinAmp would play the files in a Random Order (shuffle)

I went to the forum section and it looks like it's only other people trying to help instead of Tech Support. But I did do as suggested and Deleted WinAmp through Control Panel, Deleted the WinAmp folder under program files, rebooted, and then completely reinstalled WinAmp. No add-ons etc.

Same Problem:
I have a music folder with about 300 songs (same folder I used in WinAmp 3x)
The Shuffle no longer works.......period.
If I close WinAmp and then open it again, It Always Plays the LAST song in the folder and then continues down the list in order (no random or shuffle)
Oh, and another strange thing when you 1st open WinAmp........A small Album Art picture window opens up on top of the main Play Window for a few seconds and then it goes away! (by the way, the album art picture is Always the same and never has anything to do with the song that is playing)
I don't even want to see any album art.
Like I said earlier I'm old..........Need no bells and whistles.
Just let me pick my music folder and let WinAmp play the mp3 files in a random order....period.

I've attached my_plugin_list.txt as advised (that was before the clean reinstall so I don't know if that helps).
-I'm running Windows XP Home 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3.0
-2992 MHz
-Video NVIDIA GeForce Fx 5200
-Sound Creative SB Live! Series (WDM)
-Ram 2.50 GB
This is the Same Hardware Configuration that I had before I upgraded to 5xPro.

If there is something else that I need to do in order to get this problem resolved PLEASE just let me know and I'll do whatever I can to help.
I noticed a message on the forum that says: If you make the slightest mistake when reporting "You Will Be Ignored!"
I don't want to be Ignored.
Like I mentioned twice already: I'm old and may have made a slight mistake reporting my problem because I'm not computer savoy like the young people. But someone needs to let me know if I made a mistake so that I can correct it because I would really like this problem fixed.

I also just downloaded WinAmp 3.0 while I was typing this letter and (although the graphics, scaling, etc. are raw and not much liked...) the program works fine. I told it what folder to go to and it plays my mp3 files in a Random (shuffle) Order.

The 2 people and I that are having the problem on the forum Can't Possibly Be The Only People Having This Problem. Is it that No One actually uses the Shuffle Option anymore?
My wife and I LOVE that feature. It reminds us of the old Juke Boxes of our past. (Except with your WONDERFUL SOFTWARE, we get to decide Every Song that will in the Juke Box and randomly be played

Anyway, Thank You Very Much for your time. God knows Ya'll must be Very Busy.
Please try to get the Shuffle Problem fixed soon. We (more than you could possibly know) really LOVE this feature.

Thanks Again,
Shack"

And the response was: "Are you sure you have the Shuttle turned on"

I don't know what else I could possibly send?

If you temporarily disable the MoonriseIcon and Stickies software, does Winamp behave normally?

Otherwise, I can't see what may be causing the issue. Anyone else?

Moonrise & Stickies

Disabled both and same problem:

When I open WinAmp it plays the song that was on when I shut it off the time before.
Then it plays the Last Song of the 300.
Then it starts back at the top of the list and goes down in order.

I give up but, since the Exact Same Thing is happening to others, maybe WinAmp will accidently fix it in the next upgrade.
In the meantime I started using MediaMonkey and it is working perfectly.

Thanks All,
Shack.

I heard a relative of mine having this same problem. I couldn't really figure out how it could be since Winamp has always worked wonderfully to me.

Yesterday I reformatted my HD and installed Windows XP. Today I installed the latest Winamp version and to my surprise the Shuffle feature is not working.

I have not installed any plugins to Winamp, I just downloaded and installed it (the Full download, not bundle or pro) and the issue is there.

When I do not have Shuffle option on, the behavior is as expected, Winamp goes from one song to next on the playlist in the order. When I enable Shuffle option, the next song to play is the last song on the playlist, then it continues as if shuffle option was not enabled, playing the playlist entry #1, then #2 and so on.

The Shuffle Morph Rate setting in Winamp preferences has no effect. It was all the way to "Fast" upon installation, but even changing it to anything has no effect, the Shuffle feature just plain does not work at all on a clean install of Winamp 5.541 (x86).

Even the playlist option Sort -> Randomize list does not randomize the list anyway, it stays in the same alphabetical order as it was provided by the media library.

I am using Winamp on 32-bit Windows XP Pro, SP2 system. (Have not yet installed SP3, I just installed the OS yesterday). Winamp was installed and is being used by Administrator user account.

Attached is HijackThis log along with Winamp plugins list in a zip file.

If you need any more information, just ask. I would really like this problem to be fixed so I could listen to my music in randomized order.

Shuffle Problem Not Fixed Yet

Same Problem here.
I just upgraded to 5.55 and the Shuffle Problem still isn't fixed.

When I open WinAmp, it plays the 2nd song.
Then it plays the last song.
Then the 1st song.
Then is just goes down the list #3,#4,#5,#6, etc.

You would think that they could fix this by now!!!

@countryshack: you keep moaning about this but you consistantly fail to provide information AS REQUESTED HERE. we can't try to fix this without having a better idea of what is causing it since no one on the dev team or related to it has been able to reproduce the issue so we need YOU to help us.

@GODJonez: please can try out the above linked suggestion.

What are you talking about?

Have you read the above post????

I've attached Everything that was requested.

My machine specs, the log files, etc. etc.

What else can I possibly send??

And by the way, it's not called moaning. It's called letting the people know who wrote the product that it has a bug. Period.

I also noticed that almost 1,000 people are reading about the shuffle problem. I wonder why???
Are they moaning also???

If you can't fix the problem then please don't critize.

Thanks.

yes i have read your prior posts and you've not made any reference to going through and disabling all of the gen_*.dll plugins in your install as was requested after all of the other information provided.

Quote:

i can't fix a bug i'm not able to reproduce - hence the need for the disabling of the gen_*.dll plugins so if that is linked to the issue i've got a better idea of what to look for when i have to try to debug the source code or it means i've got to make some other form of programmatic test to try to figure out what is going on.

I just followed your AS REQUESTED HERE.
I'd NEVER read or seen that post before about turning off the dll's.

I just did it and it still doesn't work.
The skin looks different, but the shuffle still doesn't work.

Now it seems to me that if you have access to the code and I said that WinAmp 3 worked fine, there must have been some changes made to the shuffle feature. But I didn't write this code, so I obviously don't know.

I ALSO said that, even though I paid for WinAmp, I'd use MediaMonkey until WinAmp comes up with a fix.
I'm Not Moaning, I'm Not even complaining. I just check back when someone writes and tells me there is an update.
Then I update and report if the update fixed the bug.

LOL>>>You remind me of a friend of my that owns a car body shop. He grips when someone comes in with a wrecked car. It's as if it's their fault that he has to fix their car.

No worries, I won't BOTHER until WinAmp comes out with another update.
Then, if someone writes me to let me know of the update, I'll download it and see if it fixed the problem.
If it does, I'll write to let you know.
If it doesn't, I'll write to let you know.

Other than that, I won't bother.

I know when I'm writting software with thousands of lines of code and it doesn't work on someone's machine. I think the problem is mine and I spend weeks on end trying to find what would conflict with anyone's machine.
(Although it's a puzzle that keeps me pulling my few hairs out, I still concider it my problem and try on my own to resolve it.)
But that's just me.

God Love Ya Brother.
No more moaning here.
Bye.

Hello, DrO, thanks for the reply.

I tried the linked suggestion to disable all the plugins. I ended up with the old Winamp 2 style skin (disabling modern skin support, this is understandable), but the problem with Shuffle not working is still there. So disabling all plugins (I did it with holding both Ctrl keys down) did not solve this problem.

The shuffle feature is working on another computer of mine, but on on this one, nor on my brother's computer, every one of them running the same version of Windows XP.

Being a software developer myself, this is an interesting problem. As mentioned before, the Shuffle feature is not the only thing affected; the random sort of playlist also has the same problem. I have not gone as far as to reverse engineer Winamp and see what it actually does when trying to use the randomize function, but clearly there is something causing that function to fail on some computers.

If Winamp uses external dynamically linked runtime library for the randomizing function, it could be possible that the systems having this issue have a buggy version of that DLL installed.

If there is any specific information regarding that you would like me to check, I would love to. Since I have Winamp working correctly on one computer and having this problem on this computer I am using right now, I could compare any specific technical details between them.

Having the same problem

Hi, I'm new here, but I'm having the same problem that people have said in this thread. I've uninstalled/reinstalled winamp 5.541 like 10 times now and it still will not randomize the songs via shuffle at all.

With the shuffle on, it plays the last track first, then proceeds to play every track in order on your playlist as if shuffle wasn't on.

Here's what I'm doing to recreate the problem. (I have Windows XP 64-bit on my desktop, and 32-bit on my laptop and both computers have this same problem)

1) Uninstall winamp via "uninstall winamp"
2) delete all the remaining files / check for app data files and delete those as well
3) open setup => language english => ok => next => i agree => default install folder
4) type of install = custom (I just remove the agent, if I wanted winamp to start with my comp, I'd throw a shortcut into my startup folder lol)
5) Don't create an icon on my desktop or quick launch
6) none of the 'online only' stuff (uncheck the 4 boxes)
7) finish (keep winamp launches checked)
8) bento skin (large) => next
9) uncheck video files (I've had problems when winamp tries to play video files)=> next
10) make sure allow anonymous usage thingy is off (so it doesn't randomly access the net when I'm playing WoW or something so I don't lag) => finish
11) close the media library window thingy that pops up
12) remove the intro file from the playlist via clicking it and pushing delete
13) Add my playlist via pushing "L" and finding my playlist
14) Push play
15) Push shuffle
16) Push Next Track => It WILL play the track from the bottom
17) Push Next Track again (It will play the 2nd song on your list)
18) Push next track again (It will play the 3rd song and so on from here on out)

At first I thought my playlist was bad so I made up a new list, but that didn't seem to solve my problems. I'm using V5.35 (before bento) and it seems to work, but I've grown to like the bento skin, so it'd be nice if you guys could fix this problem. Thank you for reading, and your time.

-Edited for that last paragraph, this, and formatting-

I am having the some problem and reaction for shuffle but for my case it happen after I change the Language and Regional Options from english(US) to Chinese (PRC)

I did change back the setting for the Language and Regional Options and clear install both 5.551 full and Lite with out any plug or skin but no luck

I noted sometime when playing some non-english file name mp3 song the it jump over and skip it. but it will play when it is manual selected

I don't think it's permissions/access. I am using the admin account on Windows XP on BOTH my laptop and my desktop and still having the problem. So it's not just vista that this doesn't work.

Heck the problem even comes back when I install 5.551 over 5.31 even though I HAVEN'T CHANGED ANY SETTINGS : (

*bump*

This issue is still outstanding. The shuffle feature of recent versions of Winamp doesn't work in some cases.

Going back to an older version for now...

Possible fix!

I've had the same problem too, but now I think I've fixed it.

I elected the 'extended Jump to File dialog' option (or whatever it's called) on install and in prefs under Jump To File/Queue List I've been using the option to automatically 'Load playlist into the queue when Winamp starts'.

If I uncheck this, it doesn't instantly fix the problem, but it seems it's fixed after 'resetting' the shuffle feature. I found this fix here (2003!):

http://archives.lists.indymedia.org/imc-audio/2003-August/005000.html

Just add the line [ force shuffle ] to the 2nd line of your playlist like this:
(or if not using ^that^ feature, add it to %appdata%\winamp\winamp.m3u8)

#EXTM3U
[ force shuffle ]
#EXTINF:3410,1994-__-__ noam chomsky - cv
\\Jukebox\F\0305\1994-__-__ noam chomsky - cv.mp3

Now, when you load your playlist, random should work...*

If it does, then close Winamp, remove the extra line from the playlist and it all should work without the null playlist entry at the start.

* You may need to select all songs in the playlist within Winamp and remove them between player restarts, just to make sure the playlist is loading from scratch. (depends on your settings for keeping files in the queue between starts)

Hope this helps someone!

Still having this problem?

It's quick to visit that link and indicate you're having the playlist shuffle problem still.

My shuffle aggravation is GONE

This easy solution works for me. Will it work for you? I am using Winamp version 5.552 with Bento skin.

My problem has been the one where you start to realize that Winamp shuffle mode mysteriously favors some set of songs. You ignore it a first but the time comes when you can’t take it any more and start searching forums; there you find lots of ideas but nothing real solid. I haven’t seen this idea in any post, but there are so many threads about shuffle, who knows? I don’t even know which one to respond to, this one seems to be recent so here it is.

When Winamp is illogically repeating songs in shuffle mode, click stop, then instruct Winamp to start play from a different folder starting point (click Winamp icon on the upper left side of the Winamp skin to get its pulldown menu, then Play->Folder, then select your new folder starting point, then OK). There is a pause before the first song starts (Winamp building itself an internal random play-order list?). Let a few songs play, click stop, then instruct Winamp to start play from the original folder starting point. Another delay and the songs begin. For me the “original folder” is the one with all songs, and the intermediary folder is some sub-folder under the original.

When I stumbled onto this a while ago, I heard songs not heard for months. I tried it a few times just to see what would happen- always fresh songs. Since my last I have had a week with no illogical repeats, but I am ready to pounce when it rears up again. To me this seems to show that Winamp creates a decent random internal list, but left to itself for a while it goes nuts.

Does this help anybody out there?

At least your 'random' is... well, semi-random
Our problem is that random is NOT random, and actually plays the last song, then song #2 then #3 #4....

And also, my understanding of random in 5.35 is that it plays each item on the playlist _once_, with no item duped on the playlist. Simply choosing a song from your playlist 'resets' this semi-random so that it will choose from all the songs again.

I would also love have the shuffle be more like that of CD Spectrum Pro... Random is LITERALLY random, and it CAN play the same song over again. That is, once this mess gets fixxed of course ; )

I normally have the shuffle problem under vista, but managed to get shuffling working by starting the program using "Run as Administrator" instead of just starting it normally. Hope this helps vista users at least.

Program was installed under "C:\Program Files\winamp\winamp.exe", maybe installing it under c:users\ShuffleIsHard\Winamp will allow it to operate even if it is not administrator.

Are you moderators running it without administrator privs?

Any input on this from moderators?

Still same question as before, do you have to run with admin priviliges to get shuffle to work?

I've been having the same problem for a while now.

I've started my own sound/dj business. Im using my personal comp for the music, so decided to setup the guest account on my comp to keep people out of all my stuff and limit guest access.

Anyway, i use winamp all the time under my profile, it works great. A few months ago when I did my first party, i noticed something strange.

I set up winamp with different settings in my guest account, like always enqueue, fit the skin to the screen nicely, etc. Anyway, after playing with some music, i'm having this exact same shuffle problem. When you switch on shuffle, it jumps to the last song, then goes 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. The exact same way everyone else is describing. The shuttle morph rate option doesnt change anything, it was the first place my mates told me to look.

Now to elaborate a bit, shuffle works perfectly under my account (which is the admin), but under my guest account, i get the crapness. I have deleted the winamp appdata folder for my guest, which resets the settings, but no luck. Tried loading the program with the control buttons held down, but again, no luck.

No external plugins are in use, so it cant be them. Its simply that the shuffle doesnt work under my guest account. I dont get it.

Edit: I just read somewhere that promoting your guest account to an admin can fix the problem, so I tried it but no change.

For me, this is clearly a problem with the guest account. Admin works fine, but the guest account gets the "last song, song 1, song 2, song 3, etc" bug. However, when I go into the "Computer Management" program (under the "Administrative Tools" folder by default in the start menu), and go to "Local Users and Groups"->"Users", edit the properties of the "Guest" account, go to the "Member Of" tab and add the "Administrators" group, now shuffle will work on the guest account.

I've got another post here (forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?postid=2520798#post2520798) with more stuff I tried to get it to work. Nothing's worked other than making guest an administrator.

And yes, the shuffle button is on. Oh, and I tried restarting my computer.

Thats what I tried last time, promoting the guest. In vista, you have to go to cmd, then type 'control userpasswords2' to get to the advanced user properties.

This didnt make any difference for me, though I did not restart last time. Will give it a go now

Edit: Ok, that fixes it for me. It needed a restart after i promoted the guest. Still makes no freakin sense though :S

Mods, im guessing you guys cant seem to find the problem cos you're all admins on ur pc. From this thread, it looks like its definitely got suttin to do with being a guest, even though I have no idea why that could be causing a shuffle bug. From looking at other people's comp specs, i have nothing in common with them, or plugins. It seems to be random on different comps but all seems to come down to being a guest.

I hope our findings help fix the problem and help winamp continue to be the best music player!

I just updated to Winamp 5.56 on this computer where the problem has been appearing (Windows XP Pro, SP3) and the problem still persists. I am running an administrative account, so the problem is not permissions.

Moreover, I am running a limited user account on other computer and Winamp's shuffle and other related features are working 100% perfectly, so the problem is not permissions.

At least the user account permissions is not the only factor in this, but according to other posts, it seems to have something to do with the issue. I really hope this can be fixed soon, I am getting tired of always hearing the songs in alphabetical order on this computer :P

Running XP Pro and did a PC recovery (along with upgrade to winamp v5.56 afterward), and next thing I know shuffle and randomize playlist are broken for good as described above (first time this has happened). Also as described, clean install doesn't do anything.

I'm wondering if winamp changes any settings or puts in files that aren't found in the program files or app data that would cause it to carry across installations. I'd like to know if it is my computer that is causing this or if it is the program. But I guess there's no way to know.

I'll cross my fingers while I scale to an older version.

I must say that I am also having this problem. I don't have much to add to this topic except that it is NOT a permissions issue for me, and that almost nothing has changed from when I last used shuffle and when it started malfunctioning. I can only imagine that an application or two may have updated, and I agree that it could very well be a linked dll file which only a select few are having problems with. Maybe we could do with a list of what linked dlls Winamp uses and their respective versions? Always worth a shot.

Still Shuffle Problem

Looks like WinAmp can't fix the shuffle problem.
I've noticed that a ton of people have been having the same problem as me, and apparently with this new upgrade to 5.6, they haven't even addressed the problem.

That's it, I give up hope.
Deleting WinAmp off of my machine and changing to MediaMonkey.

Bye!
