New York Post Chimp Cartoon Compares Stimulus Author To Dead Primate

At first glance, the main editorial cartoon in today's New York Post seemed like just another lurid reference to the story that the tabloid had been covering with breathless abandon for two days running - the shooting by Connecticut police on Monday of a pet chimpanzee that viciously attacked his owner's friend. But the caption cast the cartoon in a more sinister light. "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill," it read, prompting accusations that the Post was peddling a longstanding racist slur by portraying president Barack Obama, who signed the bill into law yesterday, as an ape. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009...t-cartoon-race Global Movies and TV God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to hide the bodies of people who pissed me off. |

It's only awful when it's someone you don't disagree with politically. It's fine to portray Bush as Hitler. Not so nifty to paint Obama as a chimp.

Bush is directly responsible for hundreds of thousands if not over a million innocent deaths in Iraq and brags about torturing people. That is pretty close to a Nazi meme, though the Germans were spectacularly more successful in a shorter time frame than w and his cohorts.
Portraying a black man as as chimp is ignorant bigotry. I know you're a redneck from Oregon but even you must understand that. And showing him full of bullet holes should get the NY Post a visit from the secret service. "Which is worse, ignorance or indifference?" "I don't know, and I don't care."

What about the democrat majority that voted to engage in the war?
If you don't remember, the trade sanctions we had against Iraq before the war killed a million children. Sadam wiped out a couple million with his secret police and the Iran/Iraq war. The numbers I've seen list Iraqis casualties at about 50,000... not even 100,000. By our direct action, even less than that. The Iraqis will probably continue to KILL EACH OTHER.. even in our absense. If you want some real presidential killers look at Lyndon Johnson and Harry Truman. Bush doesn't even make the "bush league" ![]() I don't agree with the methods used at Gitmo, but by Nazi standards it's not even torture.... more like a cuddle... If there is a major problem with George Bush's presidency it's that he had to suffer the disrespect that you just showed. It eventually made him completely ineffective. You can expect the same for Obama. You can also expect that while Gitmo will close that most of the TERRORISTS that are still contained there won't be improving their accomodations any time soon. You can bet the maximum security prisons that will be their new home will just as nasty as Gitmo. Plus they'll have to worry about dropping the soap. Hamas may live to regret the "Congratulations" letter they sent Obama. The "symbolizing" of a black person as a Gorilla or monkey or chimp is a long time racist thing; that goes beyond which party one supports. It's an attack on President Obama's race and is , in fact, just plain disgusting.

The "symbolizing" of a white person president as Adolf Hitler is a is a long time liberal chimp thing; that goes beyond which party one supports. In fact, just plain disgusting. Frankly, I'd rather be called a monkey.

If you see some kind of racial joke in that cartoon you need to see a psychiatrist. And turn off your TV.

I could post for days the history of black people being depicted as monkeys in racists cartoons that magazines such as Hustler and The KKK had on flyers, but you'll have to take my word on it, baafie. It's something one just doesn't see, at least not in NY(til this one anyway) anymore. And for good reason.

I believe maybe the point baafie is trying to make is:
1. Obama did not write the stimulus bill; the 800 odd some pound gorilla we call congress did. 2. Earlier in the week that this cartoon ran, a gorilla attacked a woman from Connecticut. Police shot the gorilla dead. I believe this cartoon references the chimp that police shot and draws a parallel to calling congress a monkey. Don't get me wrong, if Obama had written the stimulus bill and this cartoon ran, I would be outraged. However he (Obama) did not write it (stimulus), so there is no way this dead monkey can be him. |

^ I agree with everthing you said. But(ever notice everyone has a big Butt) there was too much room for the cartoon to be mistaken for what it was. It showed a complete lack of thought as to how those who are racist could giggle behind their sheets. The Post has a right to run whatever they want; I have the rioght not to buy their rag( which I don't anyway,) And This From The Washington Post

^ agreed. Which, personally, for me the jury is still out on. Yes, a lot can be read into it, but was that the real intention? Unfortunately, this is something that we will never have a defacto answer on.
If that was indeed the intention (for the cartoon to allow people to take the next step), well the we got problems. |

I think considering the source (new york post) the intentions are clear as a bell.
"Which is worse, ignorance or indifference?" "I don't know, and I don't care."

It wouldn't surprise me if this was a stunt that was more or less intentional. Sell some papers. Global Movies and TV God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to hide the bodies of people who pissed me off. |
