How about a winamp that works?

Yes, you heard me, one that acutally work in Windows Vista.

I'm a proud Winamper since the advent of version 5.0.0. I never had any problems, until I got Vista. Yes, I can go and change back to XP, but I don't want to. I like Vista. Go type "vista" in the search bar under forums and see how many Vista/Winamp related issues are there. I think I speak for many users, and I feel that this is a totally resonable request.

And then you change operating systems?
Maybe you should have picked an operating system that works with Winamp, instead of demanding that Winamp changes it's whole code to work with whatever Microsoft decides is the flavor of the day.

You lose a lot if you cannot fully support Vista. I myself use Ultimate x64 and have had to use another player due to issues with Winamp (I really like Winamp, btw).
And with Win7 already released in Beta and the RC on the horizon (it is based on Vista), you will have far less people using Winamp if it cannot function correctly. Vista has been out for how long now? And it does run smoother and better with all the updates and SP1 than when it initially was released. Winamp should be supporting it fully.

Define "works"!

Winamp 5.551 "works" just fine for me on Vista.

The only known issues are listed here.

Other than that, we've had a few reports of problems with associating m3u/pls
(which I can't personally reproduce).

What else is there?

My winamp simply crashes the whole time. I use the term "working" because that is what winamp is NOT doing. When I open it, I get the message "Winamp has stopped *WORKING*". Sometimes it's the skin, but mostly it goes when winamp tries to load my library, ie when I add media to the lib. There's no plugins installed, just a brnad spankin new winamp, and the first run after setup crashes immediately. I use Vista Buisness sp1.

Well, you should be posting in Tech Support instead,
and providing us with all of the required information.

We can't reproduce your problem, and the vast majority of users don't experience it either,
which suggests that it must be something system-specific to blame.

Ive posted in several threads in the Tech Support and none was answered. That's why I'm here.

I have reason to believe it's my music collection itself that's causing the problem. A while ago I ran an automatic metadata updater (Jaikoz http://www.jthink.net/jaikoz/) on my whole collection. Ever since then Winamp was rendered useless. Reinstallations doesn't help. Clean installations doesn't help. I'm using iTunes now, but it's way inadequit for me. I love winamp, and I'm really missing using it.

Jaikoz in not an unknown updater. It uses the MusicBrainz database and PUID tags to update the files. It's the best one that I could find on the internet. It's way better than any CDDB updater out there. Much more comprehensive.

You should stop trying to start a flamewar, and start acting grown up. I'm never blaming Winamp for anything. I'm just stating what I believe the problem could be. The files are not corrupted, because they work in all the other media players that I tried thus far. I would be much contended if the smarties at winamp can atleas say if they are aware of other such cases, or if I'm the only unlucky one.

Just because they work in other players doesn't mean that some standard hasn't been broken causing their demise in winamp. IF iTunes is the only other player you've tried them with (you've mentioned no others) then that isn't much of a test.

[edit]Heres a test: metadata is what you've messed with and the library reads metadata from files. Try a clean install of winamp without the library installed and see if your files work with that, if they do then that would indicate to me a metadata problem.[/edit]

They work on WMP, the nokia media player and VLC.

That's a good idea, thanks. Ill try it this weekend. But how then, do I just add everything to the playlist and try to play it from there?

In the meantime, let's say it's a corrupt metadata thing... What do I do? It's 11Gb of music...

user name (you)/application data/winamp/plugins/ml

close winamp, delete the ml folder, open winamp, add your music to the library again.
