How to edit artists name to avoid duplicates

Newbie. Lifetime Windows Media Player guy but ready for a change. Here is my problem:
I got the correct folders monitored and 1023 files were added to Winamp. So far so good. Same thing that happens in WMP happens here (which is cool) in that there are the same artists that are spelled different etc.
How do I change the name of an artist to make it the same as the same artist (with a different spelling) so it will be together in one big happy place.

In the Media Library -> Local Media -> Audio view,
hold the Ctrl key down and left-click the relevant Artists in the Artist pane.
Then, once all the relevant tracks have loaded in the Tracks pane below,
select them all (eg. click in there, then press Ctrl+A),
then right-click one of them,
select "Edit Selected Items"
and type in the correct Artist into the Artist field
(unless some of the songs are from Various Artists compilations,
you might also want to do the same for the "Album Artist" field)
When done, click the Update button.

All tracks you just edited will now have the same Artist metadata.
