stopping winamp from loading album art

is there any way to stop winamp from loading album art, without having to remove the album art from the, uh, metadata?

Nope. Though, you can choose not to display it, depending on the skin and where. In Bento in the file information box, hit the button in the bottom right, go to "file info components" and uncheck "album art"
