organizing music collection in FLAC and MP3

I prefer to keep my music collection in FLAC format for backup purposes, however many devices either dont have enough storage or dont support FLAC. Thus, I need to keep my music collection in two formats MP3 and FLAC.

My dilema is: How can I store my music collection in both formats, without them getting mixed up in the winamp media library? aka if a song is both in FLAC and MP3, how do i prevent them from showing up side by side?

I would like to keep listening to FLAC on my PC, but when i go to transfer my music to my devices, it is convenient to do it though winamp, but i would only be needing the MP3's at that time.

I do the same thing that you do. I have two seperate directories. One for my FLAC files and one for my MP3s. And when I add something to the FLAC directory, I add it to the MP3 directory also. Its redundent but it works. And my winamp media library is just pointed to the FLAC directory. when you need to update your media player, clear the library, point it to your mp3s, rescan and update. sounds like a lot, but it isnt

You can do what Juanus suggests. You can also edit/create smart views to only show half your library with a query like:
filename begins "X:\Path\to\flac files"
- or -
filename ends ".mp3"

I just tried the other guys method and it works really well. I highly suggest you try it too.

Basically on the side where it says Audio, Video, Recent Played, etc.

I now have two custom ones that say Audio FLAC and Audio MP3.

To make them right click in that area where it lists audio, video etc, and click "Add Smart View.."

At the top of the window that pops up select "Custom" filter

click the + sign.

Select Lossless from the drop down
Select Equals from the drop down
Type in "1" without quotes into the last box

Name this Audio FLAC or Audio Lossless.

repeat for and type 0 for Audio MP3

The smart view idea is another solution. The resaon that I did not mention that is because my music "collection" is a mix of FLAC abd MP3. (I wish I could have everything lossless) So when I click on Audio, I want to see everything that I have and not dupes. Thats why I made a seperate directory for all of my "ipod formatted tracks" I hope that makes sense.
