What I want to know is how a dog knows that I am opening a can of dog food and not a can of peas. They know. I've even washed the can to make sure it didn't have anything they could smell on it, and they still know? Maybe opening a can of dog food makes a different sound than opening a can of peas..... but they know... and I never have been able to figure out how.
I just did an experiment. BB only gets "canned loves" once in a while (maybe once a month). BB was in her box (asleep) at the other end of the house. I just opened a can of beans. No BB. Then I opened a can of Alpo.... and in 15 seconds..... here comes BB..... BB isn't unique. I can't think of any of my dogs that didn't have a canned dog food detector. It gets their attention in groceries too. They'll pick dog food right out of canned goods. How? |

I was having trouble sleeping, so I got up early this morning and decided to take a bike ride in a pretty nasty storm. It's warm enough, it's just windy and raining sideways.
What started following me...... a drown puppy.... I tried to chase it off, but it became really clear that we're a lost puppy looking for some help. It also was pretty clear that we had no fear of cars.... I kept having to wave lights at drivers to keep her from getting run over. Kripe. I'm gonna have to actually do something..... This puppy is obviously someones puppy. Now to figure out where it belongs...... oh joy! |

(I'm assuming) No tags?
I used to find lost dogs a lot growing up. I usually had my parents put a message in the newspaper and also signs on the utility poles. Don't forget to live before you die.

Yeah no tags, but the pup seems well fed enough. Really cheap collar, so I doubt she's chipped. Not spayed. Sweet. Cuddly. Somebody has at least paid some attention to her.
BB is being a bitch. She's pretending to be good, but she really doesn't like the puppy on her turf. It doesn't help that the puppy is scared of her. Green eyed monster rears it's ugly head....... I can get them to get along, but I don't want to. To that end, I'm gonna go bang on some doors and see if I can tumble her owner before I go to work later. |

ROH, you might want to rethink that chipped bit. I thought laws were passed several years ago that required all dogs to be chipped. However, that could also be a state law.
Because I have a pit. Bugsy has been both chipped and inked. This tattoo with his s/n is massive. I would post a pic, but that would be bordering on doggy porn... |

No chips or tats on any of my dogs past or present. Must be something I either didn't know about or not applicable to my location(s).

It very well could be a michigan thing. Oddly enough, post childhood pets, I've gotten all of mine in Michigan, even though I have lived other places. I have been required to get all my dogs chipped here. Unfortunately, I've never gotten a dog anywhere else ... could be something we just do here.

I just have a stamped/etched tag on each collar. It gives name, phone number, and address on the front and vaccination details on the back.

In Oregon, pound puppies are chipped before adoption, but your normal dog doesn't have to be.
I got BB chipped more or less for the hell of it. |

Yep, got those too
![]() My dog is also officially registered with every city surrounding where I live. Again, it's because he is a pit. They all want to see the dog in person so they can tie his registration number to his tat and see if he is a mean boy. They act like my dog is going to kill them without notice. They wince in pain/fear at having to look under his leg to verify his ink. Bugsy gives them a hell of a time. They can barely catch a glimpse of it in-between all of the kisses. Sometimes to prove a point when we are alone Bugsy will roll over right in front of me to show off his gang sign as if to continually point out that he is more hard core than I am and that I should not even think about crossing him. He's got a smug look on his face when he does it too. I know it's his way of letting me know that he sees me as the alpha male, but I think my take on it is more fun. There was also a woman who came up to me in my old neighborhood before my house sold. This woman was very concerned for my well being. She told me that I needed to get rid of my dog as fast as I could. One night he will lose his internal battle between good and evil and kill me in my sleep. Yeah ... sure do love ignorance. Wow, that was a tangent. @ROH: yeah, once we leave Michigan I am still going to get my dogs chipped. Just seems like a good thing to do. Around here, the chipping law is enforced because vets are not supposed to provide care to your dog unless it is chipped. Not that it made a difference with us, but the vet we have been going to actually does enforce that. I'm sure not all do. |

Pit bulls are just a dog. The puppy is going off to animal control. If her owner doesn't come get, I think the puppy will be a real good candidate to get adopted. Our pound is better than average about getting strays a home.
Somebody will want her. |

I think she's gonna be ok. She gets held for three days for her owner and then gets adopted out. That's a couple hundred bucks with spay and shots. This is where I got Daisy.
It's where everybody looks for a dog when they aren't Rockefeller. This puppy? She'll be gone to a nice house with a yard... they screen people a little... I'm gonna kind of keep an eye on what happens to the puppy, but I think it's a done deal. Someone will want her. Compared to most of the pooches you get for adoption, this little pooch is a princess. It took me 3 months and chatting up the animal control people to come up with Daisy. I would have taken this puppy in a heartbeat. |

You can see using a dog for transportation can be a lot fancier than just getting pulled on a bike. But what is wrong with this picture? Errr..... how bout some brakes? BB would kill me on a rig like this. I could probably train her to be 99.1% perfect, but then I'd die. Squirrel! |

I don't know exactly when, but BB turned 2 years old in the last couple weeks. She's pretty good for a dog. Hell... she's pretty good for a people some days.

It looks to me like the kitty likes it. It wouldn't surprise me if the cat put himself there just to get a pat on the head.

BB doesn't know it's her birthday, but she does know she's been a little extra spoiled. BB has this thing... and it's just cuter than hell.. If I give her something nummy, she sorta says thank you before she eat's it... it's really weird... and very cute... One thing that has changed as she grew up. I think it must be the Sharpei in her. She's got this wonderful heavy hide, and it feels like suede. You said something about the oil painting effect in pictures. It wasn't the camera. Her coat is gorgeous. Not too bad for the extremely rare Tibetan yak hunting hound When people ask, and they always do, I just say her breeding is an ancient chinese secret. lol
