Shoutcast is not about server specs these days its more about bandwidth.
if you have the bandwidth available then you can host the server and if you do not have the bandwidth available then you will need to look at hosting, As far as the streaming pc goes you dont need to worry, requirements are a 100 times less than todays pc's |

I've also broadcasted from a few hundred mhz celeron II with maybe 256 ram running Win98. That's good and works in a pinch as long as you are not transcoding 320k mp3 into 128k aac+. Right now where I work takes computer security to the extreme, but I have still managed to get them to allow me to jack a mac mini into their intranet and for SHOUTcast and run a request web server off it for the QC lab. Sure the cpu on the mini is a c2d, but it's only got 512 ram and the hard drive only spins at 5400 rpm. It's more than enough....

Or server is a mini-ITX with a 1Ghz Via processor and 512 RAM. I have 2 SC servers and a Darwin server on it running win2000 server. Darwin tested to 50 connections of 600kbps video as well as whatever audio connections were were present. Processor was hitting less than 25% and ram use was still pretty low.
Your mileage may vary! |
