I don't know if it makes sense but since I use 256 MB RAM, Winamp is annoying me with skipping sounds and irritating clicks. Guess what: I removed 128 MB and no problems anymore!
Since machines are using more and more memory I think this is a bug that should be fixed. |

That is odd. What happens if you only put in the new 128 MB stick (i.e. Take out the old 128 and put in the new stuff in it's place), does it skip then?

Hey! I get the same problem! I have 256Mb of RAM and hear that annoying clicking. I never tried removing some of it to see if it still happens though. I'm also running Win 2000 and thought it had something to do with it. Anyone come up with any solutions?

I have 256 megs also, but mine just hangs the system after playing for about 10 seconds.. no crackling.... I have a very powerful system, and I can't figure out what's doing it. Maybe I'll take your advice and remove a stick.

Got 256 MB also on Win2K, but it is ECC. No probs. What kind of clicks? A regular clicking sound (nail-tapping), or something that may sound like a decoding error? (like a zippy-blurp sound)

In addition: I have the same problem on TWO different machines (different mobo, memory, HD, etc.). So toggling with memory cards does not help.
I now have a separate machine (win98se, 128MB) for Winamp and another with win2000pro (256MB). Playing Winamp 2.62 on Windows2000 is a disaster... |

Using 2.62 on win2k pro with 256 MB ram (tried removing first one DIMM then the other, no joy there). Music plays fine until I do anything that uses explorer/IE. So if I'm using an app like word, I can play mp3s fine with winamp, but as soon as I load IE or open a folder on my desktop the music starts skipping badly. Incidentally I noticed that it doesn't just tap it skiptracks forward in the song so in 2 seconds of skipping I've missed 4-8 seconds of song. IF I pause and then unpause the problem goes away until I do something in IE or a folder or whatever then happens again. I'm thinking sonique is looking real good until this is fixed...

Not a win 2k problem - depends on which drivers you use - if only 1 sets available - buy a new soundcard

Well, I had that stuttering and clicking problem also.
I don't know if what I did actually made a difference, but, the stuttering and clicking has gone away. I right-clicked on the main WinAmp window, selected Options, and then Preferences. I went to the Output Plugins area, selected the NullSoft DirectSound plug-in v2.0 and pressed Configure. Once I got into the configuration of the NullSoft DirectSound plug-in v2.0, I went into the DirectSound compatability area, and checked the box next to "Play primary buffer." That should fix it, at least, for me it did. [This message has been edited by trparky2 (edited November 22, 2000).] |

stuttering fix
I had the stuttering problem in win98 and the problem was that my graphic card was hogging memory bandwidth so whenever I scrolled on any app it would stutter. All I had to do was take my graphic card out and put it in a different slot and the problem was gone (don't ask me why that works).
However, now I have windows 2000 and I'm experiencing the stuttering problem except I can't switch slots because I now have an agp card. Any suggestions? |

addendum
A little more info about my trouble...
Now with windows 2000 it only starts stuttering when I open, close, minimize or maximise somthing, not scrolling like in win98. I have 256 megs of memory, 900mhz athlon. For example, I was doing some pretty intensive work in photoshop and it didn't stutter once until I opened or closed an image. Then, when I minimize photoshop it stutters for about 3-5 seconds. It does the same thing with IE or any other program for that matter. Thanks in advance |

Try removing smooth scrolling
I went into Tools/Internet Options and turned off smooth scrolling in IE 5.5 and it stopped the stuttering. I think smooth scrolling takes alot of overhead, and it doesn't do anything usefull. It worked on my Pentium III 500, 256mb, Voodoo 3 3000 AGP, 13.7 gig hd ATA/66

BTW
I was just wondering, what are the bitrates of the files you are trying to play?

I thought I was going mad until I saw this thread. I've been using Winamp on a series of different desktops and then laptops for many years. Until a couple of months ago (I can't remember which version of Winamp), I never had any playback problems. However, I started noticing annoying (especially through headphones) clicks, scratches, static, etc. during normal playback (with a stable playlist, with or without any other programs, disk activity, web browsers, etc., happening at the same time). The problems occurred on all types of files, but I mainly have 128kHz mp3s or the critters that the Winamp ripper produces. (My setup is Dell Lattitude D620, 1.8 GHz Intel dual-core, 4GB of 667MHz RAM, and two reasonably fast, non-fragmented internal hard disks, one dedicated just to my music collection. The sound hardware is whatever comes standard with the D620 (maybe some kind of on-board thing, or maybe the CPU does it - the Device Manager talks about a Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC). I have Windows XP-Pro with all of the updates and I consider myself to run a "clean ship" as I am a commercial software developer myself. I use the full commercial version of Winamp Pro 5.5 but I was getting the problem with other Pro 5.X versions.) At first I thought the clicks were those that one sometimes gets from imperfect source media, so I would drag the slider back just behind the point where a particularly nasty scratch had occurred and play it back again, and was incredulous that it would play perfectly but then click somewhere else later. I even thought that this was some kind of bizarre virus sent out by the record companies to put people off listening to digital music, or a ghost in the machine. Anyway, a clean install seems to have fixed it (touch wood). I would say that this seems to be prevalent enough to be listed as a common technical problem (feature?), since there seem to be a few others here who've experienced it (and probably many people out there scratching their heads like I did for weeks). And frankly, I think that users should be notified of the potential problem when they upgrade and told to do a clean install if they experience it.
