Various artists

Let me start by saying that I have searched this forum for answers to my question but found no solution. I want to have compilations grouped as Various Artists in the artist window of the media library instead of having each of these listed seperately with one track from the album. I saw several suggested solutions in which the album artist is set to Various Artists but I do not see how that helps me when 'Customize columns' in the artist window does not have album artist as an option.
