Is it just my system, or does 2.666 use about 5% more CPU than did 2.65 (playing the same MP3)?

Seems to be going in the wrong direction. Thanks AOL. :-/

Why would they use an old decoder if they have already created a better one?

lets have a history lesson.

way back when in 98 nullsoft was in a legal battle with a company called playsoft. they said that nitrane was their creation, not justin frankels. so for the time being, nullsoft had to use a different decoder. so they used the one by franhoffer, the people that came up with mp3.

after the entire legal thing, nullsoft 'won' and got to use that decoder again. now in 2000, they've decided the one from franhoffer is the better decoder.

No those alphas were based off of the Fraunhofer decoder (just like 2.22 was), if you want to use Nitrane for some reason then download and install this, I'm pretty sure that was the last version of Nitrane made (2.34).

Tom
I never would have thought I would be giving out links to Nitrane to replace a Fraunhofer decoder.

Sorry guys, but I think you're wrong on this one - 2.666 DOES use Nitrane:

Well, to all of your enjoyment, Winamp 2.666 has been released. Featuring the new, spiffier, Nitrane MP3 decoder. What does that mean in English? For you non-geeks, it's the part of Winamp that let's you play MP3 files. For you geeks like us, all known MP3 decoding bugs have now been completely eradicated.

i believe they are calling the franhoffer one nitrane. thus the 'new, spiffier' in there.

Well, it isn't purely Fraunhofer's decoder anymore, because Nullsoft optimized it (but without affecting its output). It's sorta like a combination of Fraunhofer and Nitrane.

Sorry, I fucked up, yo.. The article said it's a nitrane plug-in but it's actually based off the Fraunhoffer decoder... I'll correct it with the next site update...

Bah and humbug, the new one is definately superiour. Why it even comes close to the latest Sonique AE. Nitrane sucked the dilly oh. At least now Winamp can use it's "Hi-Fi" headline without making me laugh. CPU usage though is a big sucky gob stopper in the sky. I really couldn't give a rats scrawy tail though, as if that 5% makes a real difference on your system switch to CoolPlayer or something. Now leave me alone.

Mule.

i've tested the new decoder out on winamp, it's less cpu-intensive than coolplayer.

the only thing it's slower to is the old nitrane decoder with all those bugs. i detect a jump from 5% to 8%, no big deal - that's about 1 or 2 fps in geiss :/

the sound on the new nitrane is definitely superior.
