Notes

The Pro & Full installers are the same for this release (No OpenCandy/Emusic/AOLSearch/Toolbar).

This is the best release of Winamp ever, imo, but let's just hope & pray that it's not the last...

However, this will be the last AOL/Nullsoft release of Winamp :-(
See the download page for more info.

A big thank you to all our users, former team members, beta testers, moderators, translators, skinners,
plugin developers, preset & color theme designers, community members, everyone... for everything...

Known Issues

Some mp3 files might cause Winamp to crash.
If you experience this issue, then please use in_mp3.dll from build 3512 instead (Info | Download).

Weird black pixels on corners of Bento & Modern skin notifier. Fixed png files available here.

gen_jumpex.dll - fixes skinned window setting not being remembered

<place holder for DrO - more to come as things progress with this release>

There is currently no Essentials Pack update (have spent too much time working on the bug fixes, etc in v5.66 vs updating my own plug-ins) so in the coming day or two, there'll be an update for any of those plug-ins which were part of the old Essentials Pack whose functionality is now not natively part of v5.66.

So do keep an eye on this post and also http://nunzioweb.com/daz/releases.html for coming plug-in updates which will work well with this newer v5.66 release.

If you have issues with Winamp or still want to get it, ensure
you get v5.666 build 3516 and the required plug-in updates

I've tried to fix/tweak as much as possible in the German language pack.

The external language pack, Winamp Backup Tool and Winamp Info Tool will be always available from:

http://koopa.meggamusic.co.uk (as long as Egg is hosting it, hehe)

And I take my chance as well, thanks to DrO, Benski, Pawel, CraigF, Egg and all of the other people for all these years and moments. < 3.

Thanks for everything. Been using Winamp for 10+ years now (even registered in the pre-AOL era).

What's the reason for the ending? Can't find any info about it.

I've a question... Will we still be able to use the Gracenote database to get track/album/artist info for CDs we rip? (album art isn't as huge an issue, as a simple Google Image search usually gets those).

hopefully not, is still on my list of things to complete as part of the v5.66 release.

If you have issues with Winamp or still want to get it, ensure
you get v5.666 build 3516 and the required plug-in updates

Oh damn... so it finally happened.. have so many questions.. I hope someone can answer as much as possible:

01 - Why? Lack of developers? Lack of profit? Lack of interest from AOL?
02 - What happens to the source code? Is it available to be openly buyed? (for example, if I start a kickstarter campaign)
03 - What happens to the skins / plugins sections? I see they are still there but...
04 - What happens to the forums? Will there be any support in here at least? (well... this is sorta´ question like "DrO will you stay here and keep answering noobs and idiots questions?" haha)
05 - The download page says "Winamp.com and associated services will no longer be available.." does it mean Mac and Android version won´t be available too? Or that refers just to the "Winamp.com online service"? (from an Android phone "Winamp.com" only shows me the "Winamp for Mac" version..)
06 - ... (thinking)
07 - Will this be shamefully left as a mistery like the previous buy from AOL was? (only partially "discovered" a decade later by an Ars Technica article)

08 - If none of my previous questions can be answered, can I least know who to ask to? (PM is accepted..) I´m not interested in making it public, just for my peace of mind (yes I´m selfish, if you take my candy I NEED to know why! haha)

But don't forget to check out the 5.66 release as well, instead of only thinking about the bad news.

5.66 has a lot of improvements:

- Classic and Modern Skin prefs were polished
- Plug-in lists were improved
- new combi enqueue/play button
- all library buttons now scale automatically, depending on the font size and length of the strings
- speed up improvements

Winamp never looked better and more polished than in 5.66!!

What I'm more curious to know is what happens to the devs. Did you guys get invited to join other projects at AOL?

I'm a bit sad to find out that Winamp is effectively reaching the end of it's development but I'm more curious to know if all you hard working devs are going to be ok.

NOTE: I am Dextro!

Let me write in Russian...

Money. Always money. AOL is sinking like the titanic. They should release the source to the community like they did with Netscape.

Alternatively, AOL could hand Winamp back over to NullSoft or however-that-would-work.

Very sad news. Thanks to all the Developers and forum mods for the work over the years.
Surely it can't just stop like this?
I agree can't it go opensource?
This could be the best thing tio ever happen to it if it does.

It can't stop and I think maybe we should get some sort of petition going or something to ask that it go opensource.

09?.. 10 - What happens to Nullsoft?? Will it vanish like Winamp too?

PS: It is remarkable, the amount of fixes and improvement made in this release equals at least the next year or so of little updates... I´m proud of it, at least it feels like instead of slowly dissapearing with little sneezes once in a while, Winamp poeple decided to do a great final battery solo. It´s kinda cool if you think about it..

FULL ACK! This would be the best thing to happen in this sad situation.

I LOVED WINAMP (still love it!!) and used it for the last 16 or 17 years - and I'll continue using it as long as possible but I can't believe this is the end

Many many many thanks to ALL DEVS and all you helpful hands here at the forums.

Thanks in particular for fixing this bug
" * Fixed: [gen_tray] Lockup/double-start issues when using the 'Prev' action"
after five years or so since I noticed it - fixed with the "final release". Somewhat cynical

I want to thank you AGAIN for everything, Winamp was not only a player, it was a way of understanding "Digital Music" and their organizing, finding, playing etc.,

and I want to wish you all the BEST for the coming years and I hope so much, that there some time will be a future for Winamp (as a Crowdfunding or open source project or the like).

Thank you for Winamp.

- Fabian

Украина. / Ukraine

Так как Winamp'ом начал пользоваться с 2000, то много воспоминаний связано с ним)
Есть новые плееры, может и лучше, но лично мне, по звуковым характеристикам нравился / нравится Winamp.

Интересует, исходники Winamp станут для всех открытыми?

So sad

I got a shock when I received the email today.
I've used Winamp on a daily basis since v1.x in the -90's and can't believe it's gonna die.
The only right thing to do for AOL is donate the source code, rather than just bury it.
It still has alot of potential.

Or at the very least, I would like to finally see a fully working open source Wasabi.player.
I know it wouldn't be the same, but if atleast Maki and the rest of the Wasabi codebase could finally be opened up completely, then the community could go from there, although I'm sure Wasabi and "classic" Winamp code is pretty tied together these days so it's probably not feasible.

But still. Something should be salvaged from this. Just hoping the current version runs forever doesn't cut it. We all know that will only last a few years at the very most.

Of course, like the previous article ("How Winamp undid itself...."), but hey, at least is good to know someone with more contacts than a "simple user" is trying to reach devs and CEOs and so to throw some light out of it. Cause if it´s for AOL / Nullsoft, 3 lines and a couple of thank you´s should please all of us to explain why 15+ years of great work goes to silence.. (I know, of those 15 years you can take 6 years at most of proper evolution but still..)

Ha! Yep.. can´t blame just them, search "Winamp" in Google and articles are growing like.. weeds (sorry I don´t have an english equivalent for mine..).

The good thing about it is that it´s making so much noise.. (not just AT, also facebook, twitter, etc)... let´s see how it turns.. (have kinda of a "good" feeling very deep.. somewhere, like the one I´ve had this morning )

But why isn't there a final "Pro" Build?

I still have it and I always downloaded from the appropriate Link on the download page.
It misses the German http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/..._pro_de-de.exe (instead, it links to the "full" bundle with things I don't want...)

Could you please make a final "Pro" Build without bundled eMusic stuff and so on?

I don't want to lose Pro with that "final" build...

Thanks!
