Hi Winamp peoples,
I won't upgrade past version 2.61, for these reasons (not in order of importance): (1) There's absolutely nothing compelling in later versions (2) Later versions eat more CPU power (P3-450 here) (3) Doesn't work as well with my favorite full screen plugin, Geiss (www.geisswerks.com) -- later versions cause strange delays (4) The new MOD plugin... in one word... PHEWWWWWW!!! I have never, I mean **NEVER** heard such a poor, inaccurate, clicky horrible rotten horrendous module player in my life!! And what happened to all the formats the older plugin used to play? (5) I hate VBR MP3's and will not play them at all So anyway there's my rant. You won't get me past v2.61, EVER unless some of this crap is fixed! Tim |

Well, it's your loss. But have you tried version 2.65? It fixes some bugs (including a security vulnerability) that were in the preceding versions, and I don't recall it breaking anything that worked in 2.61.

What's wrong with the in_mp3.dll from 2.65?
(By the way, you can get a version of in_mp3.dll that's the same as 2.65 but fixes a bug with decoding certain LAME-encoded files from http://www.freedrive.com (User Name=winampuser, Password=llama). The file name is "in_mp3_234.zip", and it's in the "Programs, Plug-ins, and stuff" folder.) |

Chevy (can I call ya Chevy?):
I do not read the WA3 forum for fear of soiling my eyes with either of these two statements: "WAAAAAAAAAHHHHH! Winamp 3 isn't here yet!!!!!!!!!" or the more recent "Winamp 3 is here, and it doesn't live up to my ridiculous far-fetched expectations. WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!" This is your brain. I don't see what I'm really "losing" staying with v2.61. Yeh the playbackquality is a little better in the latest versions, I can hear it, but not much (it seems to render shitty MP3's better, which encourages shitty rips!). And who knows which version started eating more CPU time?
So what's the security vulnerability in 2.61? I understand it was something to do with M3U playlists, but how is a non-executable file (it just starts WinAMP and loads the playlist) going to compromise security, I don't get it. Anyway I went into Explorer and deleted the MIME type for M3U and it works fine with Shoutcast (before it always displayed the dialog box to 'run from current location' or 'save to disk'). I think it was a bug, not a security vulnerability. Cheerio |

And as for your sentiments on WA3 forum, i totally understand, all the bitching about when it's going to be released, then the bitching following it's release has quelled my enthusiasm for it.

I thought you'd understand. I downloaded WA3 and notice some interesting interface changes:
+ A little command module to access the different parts of WA3 (the Thingy or whatever they call it) + A playlist editor (Gawd how I HATE those!) + Craptacular graphics that drain my crappy onboard video unit. Hmm...it seems to me that not only has Nullsoft tried to copy every other MP3 player (which are all knock-offs on Winamp. Interesting.), but WA3 is slowly beginning to resemble nobody's favorite player, Sonique! If that happens, I'll start using WiMP! This is your brain. This is your brain on pot.
