Linux/XMMS as stream source?

Someone asked this in another thread, but there was no reply, now I want to know...
Can I use XMMS or some other program under Linux to send my stream? I really need to have a reliable setup that can be remotely administered. For that matter, is there anything text based? Is there any rumor of anyone working on something like this? Help me free my computers of evil Windows.

Try this

ICECAST http://www.icecast.org/download.html

I can't vouch for it though.

Use Icecast with the Streamcast plugin. Both are available from http://www.icecast.org
