When I try to listen to Shoutcast broadcast RealPlayer 8 popped up instead of WinAmp. I disabled RealPlayer Smartcenter and then reinstalled the latest WinAamp and activated WinAmp Agent and reset the WinAmp file assocations within WinAmp using select all but RealPlayer still pops up when I try to listen to Shoutcast. I even went to Explorer Folder Options and File Types and it show .pls as a WinAmp playlist file. Shoutcast uses the .pls file extension but it still launches RealPlayer 8 even though Explorer Folder Options shows .pls as a WinAmp playlist file. I have Windows ME and Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1. How do I fix the problem with RealPlayer 8 loading instead of WinAmp in Windows ME?

FAQ
I believe the answer is in the FAQ. But, if not try removing the Real Player start center from your system tray and then re installing the winamp plugin.

try this...
goto winamp->preferences->setup->file types you'll see a list of file associations in there. mp3 may be highlighted. if it is, unhighlight then re-highlight it at that should recover the association. if it's not highlighted.. obviously just highlight it. option 2. open windows explorer.. go to folder options then select the "file types" tab. it'll have the mp3 in there most likely associated with real player. just change it back to winamp. good luck! |

I tried all the available options in this thread but it didn't work and I even have WinAmp Agent loaded which is designed to protect WinAmp from evil programs such as RealPlayer but it's still not working. Even with WinAmp Agent running in the system tray RealPlayer still takes away the rights for WinAmp to play streaming Shoutcasts.
I have WinAmp 2.72 installed after installing RealPlayer 8 and disabling SmartCenter but the rights for WinAmp to play streaming Shoutcasts is still stolen. |

Stupid RealPlayer / Shoutcast problems
I'm having the exact same problem. It turned out that when I reassociated .xpl files to point to winamp, that real player stopped popping up but it would appear that Winamp doesn't understand what to do with the XPL files because the playlists don't play.
This especially sucks because when real player would popup I could at least cut the reference out of realplayer and paste in into winamp, but now I can't even do that. So the questions I have are.. 1)it looks like the URL coming out of shoutcast is going to a PLS file.. but when it hits my machine it appears to have turned into an XPL file.. Anybody know what is going on or how to stop it? 2)I've completely removed realplayer from my machine and reinstalled winamp and nothing seems to help. Any other ideas? 2) Anybody got a nuke to log at those f*cks over at realplayer? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR |

Amen mc27 !!!
I'm having the same problem with playlists from Shoutcast. I just bought a new computer and reloaded all the software from my other computer, including Winamp and Real Player.
I too cannot play Shoutcast songs. The playlists are downloaded as XPL format from Shoutcast, but on my other computer in the same house, it downloads as PLS. Winamp will not play the XPL files. I've tried uninstalling Real Player and adjusting the file types in folder options to no avail. Please help! Why does Real Player have to hyjack everything on the computer??!! Real Network is no better than Microsoft! |
