I have tried SqrSoft's DSP v1.0 for WinAmp, and can recommend it as an excellent compressor in general, although I found on lower bandwidth files it would create upper-frequency "trash." You would never notice this on full-frequency material.
I have tried RockSteady; this is a bizarre plug-in to someone coming from a radio background... I've been working for the past week to get a sound I'm happy with. It does gain riding, but it doesn't create the "sound" I'm used to hearing from radio and it sure doesn't operate like a broadcast processor! It seems cleaner than SqrSoft, though, but not as "fat." I have tried the DSP/FX demo and HATED it! Major distortion at default settings... and they want me to buy this? The other effects were interesting but the compression was almost useless. What I want is a multiband compressor/limiter setup which will compress lows, mids, and highs independently like the Orban Optimod with the XT-2 limiter chasis or several other boxes from companies like CRL and Omina. I have seen VST plugins that do this, but as far as I know WinAmp doesn't support VST... could somebody "port" a plugin for me? |

I agree - the DSP FX stuff is trashy. I understand why people might like it at first, but it distorts the hell out of music to get the "effect". Yuck.
Somebody made a Winamp to DirectX audio plugin at some point. I don't have the link in front of me, but you could get that and then go to http://www.directxfiles.com and use directx plug-ins in winamp, I guess. But the world does need (IMHO) a really good set of audio processors for Winamp. |

Suprisingly good band-aid
Brian,
You're a genius! I never even thought to look for something like this; now I gotta go download a bunch of direct-x plugins! ![]() Thanks so much for your help! WinAmp still ought to natively support this stuff, IMHO... |

Re: Suprisingly good band-aid
For The Life of Me I can't get the direct-x wrapper to work with the Shoutcast Dsp... I've ordered the plugsin as
1. the wrapper with plugins 2. the Shoutcast Dsp. For whatever reason my direct-x plugins won't initiate and the Shoutcast Dsp will not display left/right channel levels when playing a file. Help AnyOne? Quote:
