If you play a wma file with winamp and PAUSE the song,
the memory starts to decrease!!! The .wma file was 160kbps 44kHz and it only ocured when you pause the song, if you stop it the memory returns, but if you pause then press play the memory would still be leaked, it's the same for all my wma songs. I haven't testet it with another computer yet but im fairly sure it would leak there too, can someone please test it and confirm the bug? My specs: winamp v.2.75 (fresh installation,no plugins installed) Laptop computer P3 600Mhz 64Mb Ram Sorry for my bad english. |

This bug has been in Winamp for quite some time.
I had posted up a message up here before when I found it on my old Win95 machine. Basically, what happened is that all the resources are being requested but not released until the file is unloaded or stopped. This is really weird and don't know why the Winamp team has not bothered to fix it yet. That is of course this is the same probelem... |

Confirmed...
I have confirmed that the bug I described above still exists. Even in Window 98. Of course, I tested it with a file with the same bitrate and frequency setting as noted in the originating message because it was the only encoded file I had (no relation to this posting, it was made a long time ago). Here is a detailed description on how to repeat the file.
Load any WMA file but for testing purposes when diagnosing the file, it would be preferred if you used one encoded in Windows Media Player and using 160K bitrate and 44K khz Stereo. Play the file for at least a few seconds (so it loads into memory) and start up the Resource Meter program. If the warning comes up, just press OK. Make sure that all 3 of the meters are showing on the screen. That is USER, GDI, and SYSTEM. If they are not showing, double click the system icon that looks like a measuring cup that is partially filled with green. Pause the file and every 3-5 seconds (mental estimate), the SYSTEM and USER resource meters will go down 2-3%. Of course, the minute you exit the program, all resources are released and meter jumps back to where it was before the program started. Here are the urls to the images as proof. Please view them in order as listed. http://www.geocities.com/mameroms2000/img1.png http://www.geocities.com/mameroms2000/img2.png http://www.geocities.com/mameroms2000/img3.png |

Yes, it's true! Reproduced here too!
System & User Resources drop rapidly with any WMA on pause. No GenP plugins, DFX @ None, Vis not running, WaveOut or DS Output Doesn't happen with WMP. Sad! ![]() btw, shinji, Geocities doesn't allow img links! |

Well that is good that someone finally acknowledges it. Sorry that the image links won't work. I'd rather not post them here though. I just hope that the Winamp team acknowledges the bug and fixes it. I'll be watching for it to be fixed.

Got hit with this one today unexpectedly while using WinAMP version 2.72 with 98se. I was playing my first WMA file when the phone rang and I place WinAMP on pause. After the phone call, I went back to the computer, pressed play and WinAMP did nothing to my surprise.
I checked with TClockEx for the SYS/USER/GDI and there was just enough resources left to display ZERO in the ToolTip. At which point the computer locked up tighter then a drum - forcing a three finger salute. Version of WMA plug-in is 1.11. Since the original poster was using version 2.75, I wonder how long this problem has been around? Whatever the length, it need to be fixed badly and soon. That and support for Enhanced CDs and improved playlist sorting on MP3 directory loading .-=ME |

This bug to my knowledge has been around ever since they added support for the WMA format files. Viewing over the "What's New" file (it is good they left all the version info there), it looks like they added the format on version 2.20 and they did alot of fixes for it too. Apparently this one still is slipping through their fingers and is one that can get really nasty if not taken care of soon.

Solution?!?!
Running WAv5.01 on WinME I've found that DJ Egg's solution to another problem (playing .wma's w/ DirectShow, see below) appears to solve the memory leak problem as well:
...remove in_wm.dll and add ;WMA to the extension list in the DirectShow Decoder Input plugin config (Prefs -> Plugins -> Input -> in_dshow -> config) and let in_dshow.dll deal with WMA instead. Hope this works for everyone! Thanks DJ Egg! user 117 |
