Justin's Music Subscription Experience

So have you had a similar experience as Justin? You go to buy a CD of some band you've just heard and you can't find it anywhere. So you go someplace like Emusic, download and then burn it to a CD....then all of a sudden you feel slightly guilty?

I just sit back, smile and think of the fact that I have just managed to rip off some massive corporate company that pays my favourite artists sod all for their hard work.

The real question is, we as the consumer would like to know that we are fairly compensating these artists through these subscriptions services which are becoming mainstream, yet how can we be assured of that? It is pretty nerv racking to think that the only way we know that the artist is going to get compensated is if we buy what I think is less convinient in the form on a treditional CD.

We as consumers want to pay for the music we enjoy, as long as we know we are paying the people that deserve the money!

I dont like buying cd's cuz u get bad songs with the good songs insted of just the good songs. Genlaly I download music and make a band's greatest hits CD and then go and buy one of ther cd's so i dont feel guilty

how ever u cant always find a cd from the band u like (the origonal point i think)so i feel like i just riped off a small band which just makes it worse.

I think the ideal solution is for the bands to sell high quality mp3's on the net. that way we make our own CD's with our fav songs, we dont feel guilty and the bands get paid

Record companies have been ripping people off for years.
Here in France, new releases are sold at about FF 140 (which is about $ 20) when the goddamn thing actually costs FF 2 (about 30 cents) to manufacture.

record companies are parasites to the world of art in today's electronic world. They have served their purpose, mainly promoting artists and distributing their music, but they have become obsolete to a much better system:

THE INTERNET.

The internet can promote and distribute musicians and their music FAR better than the recording industry ever could.

First off, musicians have to realize that without the recording industry, their music would be much more pure... the industry has spoiled artists with money and their art has suffered. Musicians should harken back to the days before the recording industry, when musicians were everyday people with an emotion that they had to express.

Secondly, the recording industry should (althought it never will) realize that it is a parasite. It carries around with it a HUGE obsolete system that it imposes on musicians everywhere, and makes money by both exploiting the musicians and the public. It will defend itself to the death, and that is fine with me, because its death will happen soon enough.

oh yeah, and to stay on topic i haven't tried any of the music subscription programs.

I see no problem with subscription based services. As long as the money gets to the artists whos music you download why would it matter?

Because you can bet that the majority of that money that you pay goes to the company, and the artists only get a tiny percentage of thje rest.

I know in Belgium you pay about 785Bef for a cd..

and 200of that goes too the artist..
Not much..
And keep in mind the whole production promotion costs a bout 150BEF so that leaves... 435Bef for the record company...

Wasn't mp3.com originally created with such a purpose in mind?
As I recall, it was a place for unsigned and unknowns to let their music be heard or purchased around the world. Plus you could buy CD's with both the audio file and an mp3 on the disc,

A lot like my brother and some of his cds: Eiffel 65, David Grey, Six Pence None the Richer...

They all have had one good song (except for Eiffel 65, but it was his thing...) and the rest of the CD is Shit of Bull.

Talk about consumer traps! That's why I use Napster-type things so much.

Well, I own lots of mp3's but also a lot of cd's. I do download a lot of mp3's I don't own, but the thing is, I vow to myself that sooner and hopefully not later I'll get that cd. I have to have the cd. It's just my quirk. I can't stand burned cd's. I HAVE to HAVE the original copy. It's just no other way.

I love music and music is my life. It's like I can't live without it (hell, I'm listening to some now ). And I do feel bad for not paying money to buy the cd, but I'm a poor guy. I Don't have enough right now.

And whenever I get a new cd. I make mp3's. Not to immediately share them across the world, but to listen to them on my pc. Mp3's are better than cd's. Cd's get scratched, warm after a while of playing, and get ruined. And plus, I can't wake up in the middle of the night changing cd's. I have my mp3's on Winamp play every night and can't live without it. And it's the variety of my playlist. Not just one cd.

And as far as record companies. They're tapeworms. They grap all the money from the band until it dies. And then they find a new host. You think bands have a lot of money now...think of how much they would have if you cut out the middle man (the record company).
