Plug-in for USB IR remote

I was browsing through the plugins and I can't seem to find one that will work if I have a USB infrared reciever and want to use it with a remote...

Does anyone know of some plugin/product out there that works with USB infrared receivers (most are for serial ones and require a com port) or some way to hack together something that will work for me..

OR

as a last case can someone point me to some resources on how to write such a plugin for myself
