Mr. Geiss,
When I discovered that overlay mode would work in 0.99c, I was getting roughly 27-29 fps when running in overlay mode with half resolution. However, when I installed 0.99d and tried overlay mode with the same settings, my fps went to around 7 fps. I reinstalled 0.99c (directly over 0.99d) and my fps were back to 27-29 fps without changing any settings in the milkdrop_config.ini. If I reinstall 0.99d (over 0.99c), my fps goes back to 7. Any idea why 0.99d runs so much slower in overlay mode? (The other modes seem to run fine, but I haven't tested them very much.) Here are my relevant milkdrop_config settings: szMonitorName=[don't use multimon] bWindowed=0 bDesktopMode=1 nDesktopProcSize=1 bSoftwareDesktopBlit=1 nWidth=800 nHeight=600 nDispBits=32 nTexSize=-1 nFontSize=0 nFontSize2=0 nMeshSize=24 bHardwareDesktopBlit=0 nFpsLimit=-1 nWidthFS=1024 nHeightFS=768 nWidthWindowed=320 nHeightWindowed=240 (HardwareDesktopBlit doesn't work on my system. I just get bizarre colors.) My system: Asus P2B-S, P3 800 MHz, 100 MHz FSB, 384 MB PC-133 CAS-2 RAM, Radeon 32MB DDR, Radeon drivers ver. 4.13.7115, Win98 SE, MSIE 5.50.4134.0600, Active Desktop off. Thanks! |

I probably should have mentioned that my desktop is running at 1024x768x32. (Oops.)

Does it do the same thing at 1024x768x16?
BTW, I have a good idea why it's slower; I did something that makes it 3X as fast on 95% of systems, although I figured there would be a few rare cases where it would actually be slower, and here we have it. =) I'll put a checkbox in the next version so you can fix this. Cheers, Ryan |

It does speed up when my desktop is set to 1024x768x16. At 32 bits, I got around 7 fps. At 16 bits, I get around 11 fps (without changing any other settings). So percentage-wise, it's quite an increase, but still not nearly as fast as version c.
I look forward to version e! Best of luck to you! |

Overlay Mode Performance Hit (0.99c to 0.99d or e)
Ryan,
I was hoping that the new option in version e to turn off burst copy for software blit would speed up overlay mode, back to what it was like in version c, but it slows down the framerate even more. It's roughly half what it is with burst copy on. So it would appear that something else added in version d is causing the slowdown. (My system config hasn't changed since my previous posts.) Hope that helps, PaleGreen1 |

gotcha - I think I found the problem.
Try downloading version 0.99f (see the recent post here), then enable hardware blit, and enable the 'try RGB before YUV' checkbox. I think that will fix it. Let me know if not! Thanks, -Ryan |
