Evoloution

Has anyone else noticed how much the MP3 'Revoloution' has changed. It all started out with Napster underground. Then they went public. This was the beginning of the end. From total freedom of music and thought, Napster has evolved into this horrible monster which is totally against freedom of music. This haas happened throughout the history of computers. They started out with most software free, easy and reliable. Then this little boy called bill gates came along, and said that it shouldn't be free. So, he started writing unreliable software with these crappy little paperclips popping up everywhere and selling it for $400+. Now, I am a total supporter of the open source movement. Why should all software HAVE to be paid for? Why can't the internet be what it was intended for - Freedom? The freedom of speech, and the freedom to download what we want (with the writer's permission of course). Why do we have to become limited by the bill gates's and lars ulrich's of this world. Why couldn't Napster have remained free? Look at winamp. That is free, easy to use, small and reliable. windows, expensive, big, and unreliable. Same with Linux, free, easy and small. Someone has got it right. SOmeone has got it very wrong. Why should we have to pay for all of our information? Why? Oh, someone has to make a profit. Well, why can't the internet be used to send information for free, and we pay for products. Most musicians support Napster and what it stands for. We are being taught that freedom is wrong by 'the establishment', this same establishment which is no longer governed by us, but by people with money. Take a look at it like this: bill gates says "let's elect me as president" People (well, some) will vote for him. If I say "elect me instead" I may get 5 votes from my mum and four dead poeple.
See, gates has money and therefore power. I am flat broke, I have no chance.
That's about the end of my rant. I just hope you start to boycott macrosnot, and use linux, and all of those other wonderful open source and freeware programs out there.

There's at the very least a half-dozen reliable, free alternatives to Napster.

WinMX, LimeWire, Morpheus and Kazaa just to name a few. Not sure how well iMesh works right now, and there used to be Scour...

Hey that quote is Tank from The Matrix, right? ... when he blasts Cipher...

yes, but

Yes, there are alternatives to napster, but none of them are even half as good. They simply don't have the user count. I have tried KaZaA and limewire. None of them even compare (i dunno about imesh, if it has an "i" in front of it though, it is likley to be a fashion item) Napster WAS excellent, but the 'bill gates' mentality has shut it down. boycott ms, use open source instead.

of course it's Tank, I just like it.

when I had KaZaA, I did a simple search for Limp izkit's rollin (a current single, and the only search I did) there were 3 results. On napster i'd have got 100. Anyway, that isn't the point, we are being made to pay for information, information that the creators believe should be free (look at the Offspring, they WANTED their music to be let out on Napster, but their label forbade it)

What is your point? You do understand that Napster and Microsoft both operate under a capitalist society? You do realize, that in such a society, there is very little incentive for creativity other than profit and power? You do therefore realize, that if no one payed for a product, there would be very, very little incentive for one to aspire to create improvements, esepecially of the technological kind? And you do furthermore realize that if we all thought in the same circular, self-righteous, inebriated lines of thought that you propose, that there would be very little ability to create and innovate found among the masses?

No I'm sure you don't realize all of that. I'm not saying that what you are preaching (About open source etc.) is wrong. But you are wrong in your feeling that MS, Bill Gates, Napster, The Record Companies, and any other unrelated, but above mentioned party have somehow done you wrong. They have done nothing but create, market, and legally protect a product. Your bitch should be with the people who have allowed it to happen, and have swallowed it hook line and sinker - us, the masses of confused consumption driven people.

I'm trying to say that we don't need this "capitalist socety", and that things SHOULD be allowed to go for free if the creator wants. Look at an extreme example: The Communist Theory, there there were laws as to prices. We don't have those, so corporate giants are allowed to sell nearly essential things (like windows, if you have a PC, many people see windows as essential software). They don't need to price things so highly and they should spend more time on their software. The company Gap has pairs of shorts made for about a 20p (UK), they then sell them for £28 (i dont know the current exchange rate). There are more incentives - the greater good. I program PHP websites for free to show that I can and to help people. Microsoft program windows to create a monopoly, for (as you said) power and money. Their programs are unreliable and big. My sites are small and I haven't had one crash yet.

do we need money to be creative?
Money drives us yes, but it doesn't need to.

Haha.

Soon we'll be pledging alliegiance (spelling?) by these phrases:

Hail Napster!
Hail the RIAA!
Hail Microsoft!

"Welcome to the Island of people who know too much."..."Did you really think balloons would stop him?!"
See what I'm listening too.

Funny, I got more than 400 on WinMX when I searched five minutes ago.

nothing is free

Solarias, open market economy and capitalism is what makes the free world operate. Every product or service has to have a creator or provider. Seeing as we all need a myriad of things to sustain our existence and cannot create or provide them all ourselves, we pay someone else for their labors in doing so. So, we can have it one of two ways:

live in a capitalist society where we all determine the work we do and it's market value, or
live in a socialist society where the cost of each product or service is set by the greater consensus but the courses of individual lives are determined by the group for the benefit of the whole at the expense of the individual
