Digital playback of cd's on drives that don't suport it

Can winamp 2.8 or 3 have the capability to play a cd digitally, with a drive that does'nt support CDDA playback? The cdrom that came with my machine, the dvdrom that I just installed, and nearly all of my friends' brand new cd burner drives do not support CDDA, but Windows Media Player can play cd audio digitally on each machine. Apparently, WMP reads the track as a data file, decodes it using the processor, and outputs it to your sound card, after being put through its EQ, and the sound from this method is superior to winamp, or the cdplayer program that comes with windows. Is this just too much to implement, or has it been overlooked by the dev team?
