Well, now I'm off, have to run some errands, we have a Nikon speedlight that is broken.

They seem pretty grainy - what film were you using to take them> Ever consider using slide film - especially Agfa CTx films for their pastel colors. Kodak Ektachrome is good too for their contrast, albeit a little unbalanced - too much blue.
PS. nice scanner!! I'm using the HP Photo Smart S 20 Photoscanner at the moment - have to upgrade to a Nikon Coolscan soon
you should try a lower res film 100 or 200 max. Makes no difference if you're mounted on a tripod. Don't leave the shutter open for more than a minute though, or the rotation of the earth will make the stars seem like lines.
