Error message on launch

When Milkdrop is started an error message with the title "MILKDROP ERROR" and the message "Error creating D3D device (error #887602eb)" appears. I am running Milkdrop 0.99g on Winamp 2.77 with DirectX 8.0a on a Win 2000 machine with service pack 2. Hardware: Athlon 1400, 512 MB of DDR RAM, graphics card is GForce 2 MX 400. The same message apears regardless of if I run in fullscreen windowed or desktop mode.

GForce MX200/400

I have the same exact problem on the second monitor of my system. It uses the same video card as you. Would be nice to have the fix for this. I thought it was the fact I had XP Pro, but it nows appears to be the Nvidia video card. Can someone help us?

davis,

nice to see that you have looked through all the old threads.

I have a Ge_Force 2 MX TV-Out and no problem. OS on XP now. Don't know too much about the GForce 2 MX 400.

Post a bug report. C:/m-debug.txt to see if I can make any sense of it. Prob not mind.

BTW does the smoke plug-in have any problem. It uses the same sort of engine.

Hope it helped,

I figured out what casued the problem. It was an issue with NVidia's drivers, I have no problem with the latest version.

Rovastar - to answer your question on smoke plugin - where can I get the smoke plugin to test it? I'll try anything. Just want the 2nd monitor to be able to do the same as the Main.

Daviscomp,

Cannot see much from the debug file (never can really but i try )
Is it fullscreen as well as desktop?
I presume under fullscrenn you have tried all the texture size, mesh size, res seting, etc.

maybe dt9164 can help as he has solved his problems.

Can you help dt9164?

Rovastar,
Thanks dark illusion - I tried smoke. Couple things I noticed. Unable to set it use second display at full. Runs fine full screen on main display but it renders both monitors un-useable while it is 'smoking'. I did notice that smoke starts to choke when I window it and stretch the windowed box over into screen #2. (even if the actual size is not too large - e.g. 2 inch high x 20 inch wide) AVS can handle this 'test' fine, stays smooth no matter what size. I liked milkdrop 'cause I COULD (if it worked on the 2nd display) work on my sytem while other screen plays. Right now I can have milkdrop on the main and work (both in desktop mode), I just want it fullscreen on screen #2. still bummed

[standard troubleshooting]

Uninstall directX. This can't be done normally - you have to download a directX uninstaller. Should be able to find one with a Google search.

Uninstall your video card drivers. Then go through the registry and delete all references to nvidia.

Install the latest official detonator drivers from nvidia. 23.11 (what you're running) is quite old now.

Install directX 8.1

[/standard troubleshooting]

Come back if you still have problems.

My recomendation would be to go to Nvidia.com and download the latest detonator XP drivers (23.11) make sure you have the latest version of milkdrop (1.02). After everything's installed, restart your computer, then give it a try. If it still doesn't work let us know a bit more about your system and the drivers you have installed.

Heres Why (probably)

I am running milkdrop in fullscreen at 1600x1024 32 bit, 2048x2048 texture size and 48x36 mesh size. Proudly, I am maintaining a frame rate of at least 30fps while milkdrop is running fullscreen.

You may be surprised to hear this, because I am running this on a computer very similar to yours that I built for myself last year.
1.4GHz Thunderbird, 512MB DDR Ram, only I am running through a 64MB GeForce3. OS is XP professional corporate edition. (this may be a better OS to use... I downloaded it from IRC)

However, milkdrop on my comp used to come up with an error similar to the one you are getting whenever i tried to run it. I used system restore to move back to before I installed the latest NVidia drivers for my graphics card. Surprisingly, now everything works perfectly as I mentioned above.

detonator

One last thing: Stay away from Detonator XP. Windows should
load the correct drivers automatically.

been there

Couple of things First - I REALLY appreciate all the help from all of you. Second, I still have the problem but I should explain all the details based on what advise I'm getting.
I have an HP Vectra VL800 2GHz, 256MB, 40GB, XP Pro that came with the NVidia an AGP GeForce2 GTS (32M). I installed the second display adapter which is a PCI Geforce2 MX200(32M).
I have NO problem running milkdrop 1.02 in any mode off the MAIN GTS adapter. I get the error only when selecting the second adapter MX200 from within milkdrop. NOTE: I have already updated my drivers from NVidia to the latest version. In one of my previous posts, I mention the version as 6.13.10.2311 -notice the 2311 at the end. From the Device manager driver properties screen of BOTH display adapters reads version 2.3.1.1 (there it is again) So I know I have thier latest version 23.11 installed on both adapters.
Third - There is no directX install or uninstall for XP, XP comes with directX. What version it has in it, I do not know yet. Again - all is fine on the main, it's the second display adapter that produces the error. All drivers are up to date - now what?

Hmmm this is quite a puzzler. To find out what Direct X version you have (90% sure it's 8 or 8.1 but we'll just play along.) You can run dxdiag.exe it should be in your windows\system or windows\system32 folder. It also has a couple tests you can use to test direct draw and direct 3D. Although I doubt this is a Direct X issue, it's best to test everything. I believe this is most likely an issue with NVidia's drivers and Windows XP. If none of this gives you any help, try removing your primary video card and running just off of the one on the PCI slot. If it works then it's an issue with multi monitor support in XP (most likely) and a fix is most likely already in the works.

more info

OK we might be on to something. I ran dxdiag - I have 8.1. I ran tests on the main and on the second monitor - Main tests fine - Second DirectDraw tested fine but Direct3D test failed with the same error that appears from milkdrop:
----> (Direct3D test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x887602eb (error code)

Appears to be a DirectX problem with the MX200 or like you said with the second display in XP. If any of you see this issue solved by DirectX or MS PLEASE let me know - Maybe we'll get to the bottom of this - Thanks again to all -

As much as it may seem like this is a Direct X issue, I'm still 90% positive that it has something to do with Nvidia's drivers. I suffered from this same issue, but it was fixed after downloading new drivers. If you feel a bit intrepid, I suggest finding some beta drivers, as this is what I did until 23.11 came out. Run a search on google, and you should find some. I sure hope you get this fixed. Milkdrop is too sweet to miss out on.

Try some older detonator drivers if you can.
I'm running 21.83, and have no problems at all.
You can find links to pretty much every set of drivers ever released at www.geforcefaq.com

Also, borrow another PCI vid card from someone and see if it works - if your second card is failing one of the directX tests, it's quite possible that your card is faulty in some small way.

and FWIW, XP comes with DirectX 8.1
