Odd recording question

Greetings!

Here is the deal... We are throwing a house party with some great DJ talent. We are going to stream the entire party.

Problem: I want to not only stream the whole 6-8 hours of live talent...I wish to record the whole thing as well. Our VCR is old and the sound recording is not that great so I'd love to record the whole 8 hours to my hard drive. I have plenty of room for an 8 hour WAV ... BUT.

I'd like to record directly to MP3 (Space issues, opening an 8 hour WAV cannot be fun) Plus we're hoping to burn CDs of the really awesome DJs, so I'd need an "easy" way to select part of this stream.

I really don't plan on being able to stop recording to dump to a new file (It's my house party, I will be in no condition)...

Any ideas? Anyone been stupid enough to want to do this before?

Previous version of the DSP (1.8.0 and lower) have this ability however 1.8.2a does not (previous versions also require an external codec). Oddcast ( http://www.oddsock.org/tools/dsp_oddcast/ ) can do this as well and does not require an external codec. One thing to note since you plan to make CDs from the recording is that it saves the stream at the broadcasting bitrate, frequency and channels, so be sure that these are high enough where the CD won't sound like crap.

I do have a bandwidth issue, and would like to record at CD-quality, but I could stream maybe three people at a time then...

I already thought of just running streamripper or somthing on my own stream....but I need to stream at around 44Kbps/mono to allow a buncha people....

Ahhhh...maybe I'll just run a second computer just for the capture... But this still leaves me at my first issue... Anyone know a good way to record your line-in to an MP3 directly for over 6 hours?

Well you will be streaming this right (via SHOUTcast), so the computer will have the input and it can be sent out via the DSP?

If that is the case you can get yourself a DSP stacker and run multiple instances of Oddcast. Setup a low one to be broadcast and then the other set the Maxlistener to zero and use that as the high bitrate stream to capture.

You may also be able to set your output plugin to an mp3 encoder and then broadcast via the DSP and record via the output plugin but that may depend on how your recording and playback mixers are setup.

I think I figured out what I want to do.

With your help, of course Tom.

Run TWO SHOUTCast servers -> One for streaming to the world, one for myself. The one for me will have a good bitrate (What is considered CD-Quality again? Ah, I can look that up). I'll run Streamripper on the server for me. Boom. I'm streaming to the world and saving the stream as an MP3 at the same time. Just setup two connections with my Shoutcast DSP with 2 diffrent bitrates.

Does that sound logical? I think it is.

Yeah that should work for you. I would go for 192 to 256 kbps, 44 kHz, Stereo for the stream to record. Of course make sure you have enough disk space for whatever you choose, and most importantly do a test run before the party to make sure we didn't overlook anything.

I'm doing the exact same thing; producing a SHOUTcast from home every week with a few different DJs.

What I did to record was to use Total Recorder. It has a cool little GUI for recording as well as a virtual driver that lets you treat winamp as a source for recording. With it, you can also configure it to encode to MP3 as long as you have a codec installed.

There's a bit of a FAF, but once it's working, it rips. No 2nd computer neaded, not tending to it, nothing.

We recorded last night at 320kbps 44mhz and streamed at 96kbps.
