I have a Sony somethingoranother. I'm very happy with it. It plays discs that other machines won't. For example, my Hannibal DVD is scratched right to hell... you can see great big gashes all over it. The Toshiba DVD Rom on my dad's laptop won't even recognize it as a disc. The Sony, on the other hand, can at least play bits an pieces. You can still watch the movie, if you don't mind it pausing every 3-10 seconds. And I also have a warped audio cd that won't play on any machine in the house. Runs fine on the Sony. And it'd be under $300 USD, too.

The screensaver is a little colored solarized Sony logo that randomly pops up on the screen. Note that my model DOES NOT have CDR/RW support. I rarely make VCDs, and never make audio cds (I have an mp3 cd player), so that's no an issue for me, but it might for you. The model one up the list does, but it's $50 more. |

Not only that, they are usually fixed aspect ratio. When you get crazy resolutions like 1152x864 on a desktop, the picture tends to go squirrly.
