You take the first pill when the doctor gives it to you.
You take the second pill 30 minutes later.
You take the third pill 30 minutes after that.
3 pills...one hour.
No. When the question says:
A doctor gives you three pills telling you to take one every half hour.
If you take a pill every half hour, one would deduce that one(1) pill lasts thirty(30) minutes.
Now for the rest of the question.
How long would the pills last?
One could agrue that the pills would last thirty(30) minutes beacuse that is how often you have to take them.
The correct way to state the question they are asking is:
How long would these three pills last?
This is the only way it really is clear.
Now, with our previous deductions that one(1) pill lasts thirty(30) minutes, we could then, by simple matimatics, ascertain the answer.
Words on top, numbers on bottom:
one pill + one pill + one pill = 3 pills
30 min. + 30 min. + 30 min. = 90 min.
60 min. = 1 hour
30 min. = 1/2 hour
90 min. = 1 & 1/2 hours
Giving us the final answer of 1 & 1/2 hours which, I bet, the 74.6% of us that got the question wrong, had.
