two things i was wondering about

1st how would i go about making a visual plug in. what programs are needed, are their any site/s that i could go to, are there any books (if any) that are a good read for this?

2nd what a is very good bit rate for mp3s to use on a car system. i have my songs playing full blast so i would like them to be clear and crisp and sound as if it were a CD. most of my mp3s are at 96-128 bit rates.

thanks in advance for any info you guys hook up.

well, if you're converting them to audio(as opposed to a car mp3 player), get as high as possible, since they all end up the same size per length. But, if you're leaving them as mp3's, i suggest at least 128, probbably one or two notches up.

1. You must know how to program in C or C++.

2. 160kb

Knowledge of any win32 compiling programming language will do.
You should know how to use the win32 application programming interface, too.

I encode my mp3s at 320KB/s...

out of curiosity, is there a bitrate where the file sizes will actually be about the same as the original wav file?

NO. Because I am sick of telling people this. Visual Basic is too damn slow and crapy to make a visualization plug-in. Same for I/O.
I said programming language, not VB

Please tell me this.

Why in God's good name would you want to encode (meaning compress) a sound file, that would blimp the same space on your hard drive as the original?!!?!?!?

That's like zipping a file but it's gonna be the same size as the original.

/me counts to 10
/me calms down

hmmm thanks for the info, i really mean it. i'm VERY picky when it comes to sound so i like things to sound great if anyone could direct me to a cool mp3 website that offers info on how to improve mp3 sound and such that would be cool.

it sucks that i have to learn c++ or something to make a visual plug in. i was hoping it was more to do with maya or 3d max. i'm in a motion grahpics class and i was hoping that a visual plug in would pull in some extra credit ;P

well you see i have a computer in the car that i use to play mp3, but that uses too much to run all day and night, so i'm thinking of getting a car mp3 player like Empeg or something.

Hey VB is still very code oriented, it just makes it better as a language because you can speed up app development. But C/C++ is by far the best language I've seen/learned/used.

I do mine using lame and set an abr of 192 with lower limit of 96 and upper of 320.

Anyone who says that they can't hear a difference between a Xing encoded 128 and an abr lame encoded 192 is either a liar or simple tone deaf

I don't care to much about space, so I usually go Lame at a CBR of 192kbps.

I use --alt-preset 160 (ABR 160 kbps) because --alt-preset standard files are too big for me, take too long to encode, and I can't tell the difference anyway.

Apparently the next version of LAME will improve the ABR modes, so that's good.

There's no need to tell me when I'm right;
I operate on that principle exclusively and with absolute certainty
