Some large-scale Java applets, e.g. online banking sites, won't work on Sun's JRE though.

Why not have both? Pesonally, with XP, I'd go with MVM just because of it being MS and MS has a past of screwing up third party software, ie. Netscape.

Get the JRE. It's the most stable one. Microsoft's is crap. It has security problems.
If you EVER come to a site that has an applet you can't view with Sun's JRE, then you probably do not want to run that applet, because something is wrong with it. It's trying to get too much access, or something. For the freedom to express myself in my own way without fear of being censored or banned.47 65 6C 61 65 64 2E 63 6F 6D 00 |

Personally I'd install both - some applets only use features available in one or the other. They can co-exist happily, and won't mess anything up.
I personally prefer the Sun one though

If it's a feature that's not in the JRE, it's not really a Java feature. People who use MS proprietary pseudo-Java in their applets and apps are morons. That defeats the entire point of Java.

Yup. I agree with most of the points curiousgeorge pointed out. That's why I did not install MVM for my XP. JRE has some nice controls that you could play around with; it even shows what some of the javas are doing.
