I think that the key phrase here is "The pc ran stable for about 15 minutes..."

My athlon 1400 runs stable at 1600...Been there for 2 months, never change the settings any more...

Why not get out the super glue and circuit repair pens and unlock the cpu nofx?? I see you're running your fsb at 155 which would stress ddr266 ram a fair bit...Or have you lowered cas latency??

I used to run a 150mhz fsb with cas 2.5 latency (even kingmax ram has it's limits) till a real thorough benchmark session showed that the system was faster overall at 133mhz fsb with cas 2 latency...Stock speed and it was actually faster like that.

I doubt you'd see any difference between 1678 and 1706, but bigger numbers are cool...

i was thinking about unlocking my cpu..i have the shit to do it at work...perhaps i will..

i have cas 2 ram...but its still stressing it i bet..thats why im gettina stick of 512 cas 2 pc2700 .... w00t! hehe

i checked overclockers.com cpu database and there showing guys who have xp 1700+ 's oc'd to 2600 mhz...thats insane..i dont even think that possible..considering the highest oc on xp 2100's listed on the site is only 2200mhz...

Dunno if it'd be possible to get to 2600mhz...tho i've heard of some P4's overclocked to over 3ghz...

Serious refrigerated cooling needed tho...

At those kind of speeds, they are probably using liquid cooling. That stuff is cheap to buy now you know.

I also found this...

Cos it's important to get that extra 10 3Dmarks, that extra 1% on that benchmark, to make your pc I3373r than it should be.....All valid reasons to overclock..

The CPUs and motherboards aren't capable of running that speed.

Bilbo, why ever upgrade? Why not keep using the same 200Mhz PII MMX? Speed, my friend. The speed makes all the difference. I could care less about artificial benchmarks, but I would care if I could shave a few seconds off Windows startup time and make it possible to open a few more apps at once.
