Please Save Me From Realplayer!!!
I have recently purchased a fujifilm 50i mp3 player and digital camera. The hardware works great, and is fun to use, but the software really lets it down. It comes with plugins for Realplayer jukebox, which I must say is a truly ugly piece of software.
I was wondering if anyone in the Winamp community would be able to help me out by writing a plugin for Winamp? PLEASE SAVE ME FROM REALPLAYER!! |

At the moment I have to use realplayer to transfer files to my portable mp3 player. It really rips my undies as it is unstable and slow, and as for considering human factors - the programme is so un-usable. So if anyone has suggestions that could help me avoid realplayer, this would be great!

Tara Plug-in for Winamp to play RealPlayer files.
You need RP's drivers for the plug-in to work so don't uninstall it. But...go into Real's settings and deselect everything, to unassociate Real from all media types.

he doesn't have real player files. he has mp3 files. so that winamp plugin is useless.
in this case i would say a winamp plugin for what your looking for would be useless and would never come. you need a stand alone program or drivers that would make your computer think your mp3 player is like a hard drive or some shit. windows XP recognizes mp3 players automatically and lets you move files to them like no body's business (ie real) so get that once you check xp compatibility with your mp3 player. or better yet get a nomad jukebox III. or archos. Its easy to transfer files onto the SmartMedia memory card. However, to put MP3's onto SmartMedia so that they can be played they need to have an .SVQ header added to the file. This is what Realplayer currently does and why I need someone to write some sort of plugin.
Windows XP does pick up the Fujifilm 50i, and treats it like a removable hard-disk, however, if you transfer files in this manner it does not work as the header is not added. .SVQ headers are added as a rather stupid security feature to stop illegal copying of mp3s. However, it is completely ineffective as (if you were so inclined) you could still use the mp3 player as a removable disk and distribute files in this manner. |

Baafie's Website and /me on IRC simply turns out like * Inatlantis Go on AVS chat and you'll see what I mean. I found that the movie maker thing built into XP is quite usefull for people like me who get shit software with their webcam. Its easy to use but id quite like a good program to use too.

I've looked all over the net this morning, and it *appears* that the svq format is more than just a header. It actually encrypts each track using the smartmedia card's unique id, using some technology named InfoBind. So basically, I think that unless someone has reverse-engineered the format, or the company has released a standalone verion of the transfer software, you're shit out of luck. Sorry to report that, and let us know if you found out I'm wrong, I'd rather be wrong than right in this case!
-=Gonzotek=- But I'm feeling much better now. |

Realplayer is really lame. I suppose the streaming G2 is ok,
but over all the Real Player is very UN-Sleak, and is bulky.

My brothers Nokia 5110 worked similarly, and neither of us ever found a way of using it other than with Nokia's el crappo software that came with it. Not as bad as Realplayer though, I feel for you ...

whenever you buy computer hardware peripherals like mp3 players or the sort resarch the software that comes with it cuz it might make a difference.

Like I said earlier, the hardware is cool. Works well, has delivered to my expectations, good sound/images etc etc etc.
The units that you mentioned earlier would not have delivered on the aspects of the product that were important in its purchase. It is frustrating that the software lets the hardware down, but in hindsight I don't believe it would have stopped me purchasing it, as there are no other units that I could find that were as suitable for my purposes. |
