Truancy - Is jailing mothers the solution?

We just get more and more fascist by the day. It all started with this:

Blairs benefit cut threat to parents.

Now while I am sure that in some cases, the parents may be to blame, in most cases it is the kids at fault because they are either too lazy to bother with school, or the schools are so awful that they do not learn anything anyway.

Now we move into this: Mother jailed for truant kids. Surely it is not right to remove the mother (arguably the single most important person in a childs life - no matter what their age) from the home?

Any thoughts?

They should allow the parent to make a choice: Either the kid goes to Juvinile Hall for some time or the Parent is incarcerated. A very hard decision for most parents to make.

I've never really understood why kids hate school so much. I really didn't like it but that's because I was bullied constantly. The lessons and stuff were ok though. There's a thought that school and learning is somehow un-cool and geeky. The only way your going to get these kids to goto school is to make them WANT to goto school (don't ask me how). The parents send them off to the bus but can't be held responsible for what they do then, truent or whatever. Jailing the parent wont do anything until they get out and kick the shit out of the kids for putting through that. I guess they'll go after a good kicking .

I reckon that it is wrong, but something needs to be done. Maybe a criminal record and going to jail for 60 days is a bit too much. I reckon blair has been playing too much monopoly:

I don't know what the answer is, but I don't think that's it.

Apparently those girls went to school today.

My solution wouldn't be to take child benefit away from kids that didn't go to school, but to give it as a reward for those children who did go.

There's some council kids moved into a house round the corner from me - mother's single and doesn't work, so they're obviously claiming every benefit under the sun. The kids don't go to school, but hang around the village all day graffiting on everything and breaking road signs as well as trespassing on other people's property while they're at work.

Before anyone says anything about it not being them... it's obviously them as there's only about 30 houses in the village, and the problem started when they moved in.

Taking their benefits away might work, but if it doesn't then I don't think the mother should go to prison, but she's obviously not a good mother and should have the children removed from her care, otherwise the kids are going to be layabouts too (as they certainly aren't learning how to become a productive part of society by not going to school), and I and taxpayers like me will end up supporting them forever.

Jailing is a bit harsh....

It might not be the mother's fault. I think some counselling is better than jailing.

Just a thought.

I am just a normal person sitting on the bench and reading newspaper and having a cup of coffee. Why can't people see that?

On the one hand i think it is wrong to send the parent to jail.
coz of the kids, surley there must be another way of making the kids go to school and still be able to see their parent, i.e if truancy is kept up with, then a weekly boarding school until the kids sort it out.
Time out from bad parents may influence the children into the right way about things at a young age. The bad parents are hardly likly to learn anything new, (cant teach an old dog new tricks),(not without a lot of hard work!) Take a look at prison offenders they generally go back and forth for most of their days. If you take the parent away then that is most likely the way the child will go also. Unless the child was traumatised into always doing things right from then on.
Shock treatment dont always work. Help is more the thing thats needed not punishment i conclude.
