network streaming on own lan
Guys,
I was wondering if any one can help me with a little problem I have? I've got all the gear for streaming to the net using Shoutcast. What i am trying to do is simply stream it to another computer on my Lan. Is there a way to get the shoutcast dnas server plugin talking to another winamp on another computer. It would be nice to stream to ones own house network just like you do to the web. The host computer contains the winamp with plugin and the dnas server. I cannot find how to get another computer's copy of winamp to pickup the stream. Any ideas? Or am i missing something obvious? Regards, peter |

You can just share the MP3 folder and the the other users can build a playlist out of that and play them over the lan. We've done that before on 2 win98 boxes. If you try to disconnect them it just immediatly re-connects and starts playing from where it left off. I am thinking about doing this kinda think at home with an MP3 server running between a few machines.
I really don't think there is any need for running a shoutcast server in this situation. "We think science is interesting and if you disagree, you can fuck off." |

if you want a pretty interface and have a webserver with php on your lan this is pretty cool I think, but I am bias.

if the host computer is transmitting, then I would think that the only thing you need to do to listen on another computer is enter the IP and port of the host in the Add Url option of the playlist. It would be no different to connecting to a stream from the internet

Explain please? What exactly are you wanting to do?
Do you want the client computer to be able to control which songs are played? Or, do you just want the client computer to be able to listen? For the freedom to express myself in my own way without fear of being censored or banned.47 65 6C 61 65 64 2E 63 6F 6D 00 |

Thanks guys for your help. Time to explian some more.
I've long had this idea in my head that if you had an office of say 10 work stations you could run your own little net stream around your office LAN. These are all Wired LANS as normal. This would stop arguments in the office over what Radio Station gets played. You then rebroadcast the selected ones on the LAN. The idea is that your Lan time is FREE and not all radio stations stream either realibly or is their on air signal strong enough in a basement office building around the computers etc. I don't want any of the bells and whistles that let you control winamp over a network. Nor anything more than just a client machine been able to listen. I have currently TWO computers linked via 100m ethernet using a X over cable. To try this idea out i just need to know how to find the IP etc to put in the browser of another compter's winamp. If i get sucess on a small scale i'll look at putting it into action on a larger scale. The larger being another story and more like a radio station on it's own WAN over the town. Ps The idea of sharing the files works as i can do that now. But it doesn't allow for a continuos stream like a Shoutcast. I hope this helps i'm not a net guru and even the ones i know think i'm silly. Regards, peter |

If all you need is the IP, the do the following:
Start-> Run -> "cmd" (or "command" for 9x/ME) At the command prompt, type "ipconfig" That will give you the computer's local ip address and other junk you shouldn't need. For the freedom to express myself in my own way without fear of being censored or banned.47 65 6C 61 65 64 2E 63 6F 6D 00 |

I am doing this for a business idea, so I know what you are going through. But, like these guys have said, all you have to do is set up the SHOUTcast server on 1 computer and the connect to the stream using Winamp and the server's IP address. The computer that is the server must have winamp running and connected to the stream and I would think about getting WWWinamp, which is a web-based Winamp controller and that way, you can control what you listen too and not have to touch the server.

Guys
Thanks heaps!!!!!!! All i needed was the winpcofig(wot ever) i got it from there. Plus the port number with a little look at what the server is on. Some times you just need that little thing that makes it all seem easy. I knew if i had the shoutcast gear it was possible to do it accross your own LAN. I did try it once by putting in the ip for the other machine but no joy!!!! This was in the spot where it says local host. But silly me was putting in the ip for my net connection. Ok forgive me! The idea is to try this in an office situation at work. There is some serious fights over what radio station gets played in an open office containing 10 computers. thanks peter |

I hve a simple question for the guys here:
- if I have, say, 2 computers connected to the saame stream, will the audio that comes out be REALLY, Exactly, Precisely synchronized? so, in an open office, won't it be a sound bouncing delay effect? hoping I've been not clear enough |

Guys
Yes the delay is a pian even if you open winamps on the same machine. But this is not the case for this. The office is open but in a cubical sort of thing like a library cubical. So you have soem small form of privacy. Instead of one radio blasting away and making funny noises when someone prints a document. (the printer is near the window and so is the radio as this is where we can only get rection). The office sever is up stairs and gets better FM recption. But it will need to sit near the server. This i'm not happy about nor is the administrator who thinks i'm silly too. This actually gives the guys more flexiblity to choose what they feel like hearing from the services on offer. Remember we are down in a basement office too and we don't get good FM recption in the first place. I figured it was a great idea and now the only thing needed is to convince the powers that be. First it will stop some heated arguments. That's got to be a bonus!!! Regards, Peter |

Anyway, careful about this because companies in California have been sued over an office MP3 LAN stream and it has cost them millions for sharing something like 1GB of mp3's around the office. (read: illegal to stream mp3s. ) Anyway, good luck with that thing.
